How to fix "jerky" video clips

(Be nice - this is not dirty stuff)
Most videos, mostly .avi format I download (long or short) play fine but occasionally one plays stilted rather than smoothly, jerking over several frames at a time while the audio plays OK.
Is there any way to fix this?
I've tried playing these on Divx player but it makes no difference.
Any suggestions?
