Hello board. Here's my problem I just bought a new dvd player a Harmon Kardon dvd38 I like it so far but here's my issue.I have a rather large collection of burned discs. Some are made from downloads of non-copywrited shows ect... some are backups of movies i've purchased.

The new player plays my dvd-r discs no problem but chokes on my dvd+r discs.(it is compatible w/these fwiw)It starts to load but then does nothing. Some if I press info on the remote it will show the title and track number but I get no pix.these are sony dvr+ discs btw.Made on Nero-8 and finalized to dvd rom.My old player a Samsung dvd r135 plays all of these w/out a hitch.

Any clues here thanx in advance.

Crazy but it seems more often than not that expensive dvd players seem not to be able to read burnt dvds well, yet the "el cheapo" $29 dvd player made in China and sold at Walmart seems to play everything under the sun. Go figure.

finalized to dvd rom

Do you mean booktyped to dvd rom?

Nero6's infotool won't show me if my plus format backups are booktyped. Dvdidentifier will:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:MAXELL-002-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD-ROM]
Manufacturer Name : [Hitachi Maxell Ltd.]
Manufacturer ID : [MAXELL]
Media Type ID : [002]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x]
--------------------------------------------------------------------

That backup is booktyped.

See what dvdidentifier says about your plus backups. Click the clipboard and paste it back into your next post.

Players can be picky on certain MID coded media,as well as certain dvd-rw drives. Changing any drives-standalone/dvd-rw- is when this compatability issue hits. I'd take that HK player back if possible, especially if you are like me and have a ton of plus format backups.

That is booktyped. Proves that some picky players won't read booktyped backups.

I couldn't find much info, but here's a place you can add your info to:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers/harman-kardon-dvd38/8354

http://www.amazon.com/Harman-Kardon-DVD-...boutThisProduct

It also proves you can't go by specs.

1)SonyD21 is some pretty decent media. If you burned them too fast or too slow, that may be the culprit.I keep them at 4x or 8x.The HK player may not like the SonyD21 media. It may play verbatim or taiyo yuden. With these picky players, gotta find the right recipe for them.

2) Still could also be the burn engine used. Some of those picky players can pick out a certain burn engine.

What's the brand name, model#,and current firmware version of your dvd-rw drive?

3)A firmware update may help. It controls the writing strategy.

4) 1 last thing: Slapping any paper/sticker labels on them?

You won't be able to do much with the older backups on the plus format. Most likely re-rip them onto the dash format or rerip them to some RW's and erase them for other flicks you want to watch on the HK player..

Future plus format backups, you may be able to get around it with better media like Verbatim/Taiyo yuden and 8x burn speed.

I've helped a countless number of people with the higher dollar players and they are usually the pickiest. Especially the $3000+ Denons!!!!! A 3 grand player that won't play backups-totally sucks.
