ive been trying to figure this out of how to play backup copies of games on my xbox 360. Ive ordered and opening kit and i know that i have to look and see what type of dvd drive i have (im pretty sure i have the hitach). first question - if i do have the hitatchi drive, than what rom that drive has is important to how to flash the drive.
second question - i am at school and only have my laptop. i do have a friend who has a desktop i could use, but again, i dont understand what is being said about sata ports need to be compatible - where can i get more information about hooking up the xbox to the pc (or laptop preferable, can i get a sata to usb adapter).
third question - what is a "kreon" drive. i see that it is easier to make backups with this drive but that it is more $$. im willing to pay some more $$, but again, is this kreon drive only able to be used in a desktop, or can i hook it up to my laptop.
finally, where can i find information about newgroups and how they work.

thanks a bunch guys

There is a big bold thread at the top about modding which may answer most if not all of your questions.

1. I do not even understand what you are asking on this one.
2. SATA slots you would have to open the PC and look unless he has the specs on his motherboard. But there are cards you can buy (pretty sure you can get them for a laptop) that you could add SATA slots with and do it yourself. Pretty sure the card is not USB.
3.Kreon drive is a specific Samsung drive (DVD-ROM) which someone has made a custom firmware for allowing it to read original Xbox 360 discs (something a normal drive does not do). These are DVD-ROM so they only read the disc, they are not burners so you still need a decent dual layer (DVD+R DL) burner to burn the file once you make it.

do a search on newsgroups you will find your answer, the kreon drive makes the whole process of copying a retail game a whole lot easier, however since you are asking about newsgroups i doubt you will even care about the drive. you need the right sata card to do the job and like steimy said this has all been written before just read the tutorial.

sorry for asking things that have already been discussed but what tutorials/posts are you guys talking about where i could get my answers? all the posts seem to be about burning the games

steimy - i was reading a hacking the 360 for dummies and it was sayin that the hitachi drive is unable to be flashed with a sata that is connectedto a laptop. is this true?

also - what are good dual layer dvd burners that are external - i can hook up to my laptop?

final questions - (just tell me if ive got the jist of it here) i flash my xbxo dvd drive, and then all i need to do is make good copies of the game and they will play on the xbox? i dont need a mod chip or to solder? is it worth my money to buy one of the things where i dont have to open up my 360 to reflash it each time?

Not sure as i have a Samsung, but they make flashing kits for drives that you can buy, one is USB but it can only be used with one specific Hitachi drive. I know people with flashed Hitachi's so i would say for the most part you can flash it with SATA the same as the others.

I do not use External burners because USB is just slower then my internal SATA. But if you buy a good name brand like Pioneer, BenQ, or NEC it should do the trick. But wih a laptop you will never be able to read an original game to make a copy.

As far as your process you pretty much have it right. Once the drive is correctly flashed it will play and correctly made back up. Just be warned that if you play on Xbox Live you do run the risk of having your console banned.

and the threads are the big bold one's at the top. Like this for example

\what do you mean that "with a laptop i will never be able to read and original game to make a copy? isn't that the purpose of purchasing a kreon drive?"
and
"is the only downside to having an external burner the speed? because my desktop is in new jersey and im in colorado, so id rather just be alittle bit more patient than have to find a desktop to use"

and. the flashware(?) that i need for my hitatchi drive is in xbins i thought?

What i mean is the Samsung Kreon flashed drives are internal drives. So unless you get a USB enclosure, put the drive in that, and plug it in via USB you can't use one with a laptop.

I should have stated it can be done it will just cost you a bit extra and be a bit slower. I have not tried this personally so i have no idea what results you will get. Reading and burning games takes quite a bit of RAM and processor so i hope your laptop is fairly new or you may run into problems.

Ok to straighten things out for the noobs: kreon-Samsung drive has nothing to do with the flashing of the xbox or being in the xbox or anything. It's just some old $30 drive that someone found and it can rip games with a Firmware by Kreon.

Noob need to learn about flashing the xbox before worrying about how to rip games, And most people with flashed drives don't even worry about the latter.

i understand the concept of how to flash the drive, but i do still have some questions:

i understand that with the hitatchi dvd drive i have, that the rom of the drive makes a difference in how to flash it.

can i buy an external sata - usb adapter and use this to flash my drive, or is it necessary to use a laptop.

ive read all i can about flashing, and how to correctly get the 360 to play backups, its just im stuck with details. I cant tell u guys which version of the dvd drive i have in my xbox because I ordered an opening kit and it still has not arrived. I understand that the kreon has nothing to do with the xbox, but i would like to use it so that it makes ripping games easier.

is it necessary to use a desktop computer to flash my dvd drive, or is there some sort of sata-usb adapter that i could use to flash my dvd drive with my laptop

oh yeah, you will have to use a desktop to flash. And that desktop's mobo or SATA card needs to be compliant with the ones described in the guide you read.

I say just buy the VIA SATA card. $10 it's what i did.

where can i buy the via sata card? and unfortunately if i have to use a desktop, i have to use on of my friends. how easy/hard is it to physically install this card, do i have to install software to make the card work on his computer? also, ive been looking at things like the xeno top gear. is it necessary? i mean is it recommended to reflash the drive when new firmware comes out? all a prodcut like the xeno top gear does is just make flashes the drive without opening up the xbox possible right? and this is excluding the first time? sorry for all the noobie questions i just want to be sure that im spending my money on the correct things.
thanks

Sorry for the late response:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815124022
$13

NOTE: i used this to flash my samsung drive. This is the thing to use for Samsung, i'm unclear about the Hitachi although i think you use the same thing. Look into it.

Look up the dummies guide to flash your xbox.

I think you will pretty much be at a standstill until your opening kit comes. Because to tell you much about what needs to be done you first have to know which specific Hitachi drive you have in your system.

Also on a side note i hope the tutorials you read told you about a hair dryer and razor blade to remove the sticker without damaging it then sticking it to wax paper so it can be applied back at a later date if needed.

thanks for all the help guys.

i have the hitatchi drive and its version 0046DG.
what sata card should i buy to connect my friends desktop to my xbox dvd drive? tomorrow i am gonna post a picture of a screen shot of the command
msinfo32-->components-->storage-->SCSI (i am not sure if this is the right information for telling what sata card i need to purchase.
question :: is the sata card i purchase dependant on the motherboard and/or my dvd-drive?

can anybody give me a link or a specifc name/model number of a sata adapter (card whatever its called) that i should buy?

last question ---> i would like to be able to read and copy games using my laptop. i found somebody on ebay who claims that he has an external already flashed kreon drive. i have also seen that there are numerous external dvd DL burners. can anybody recommend a good external burner? my laptop has 1 ghz and 1 gigbyte of RAM. are these specs good enough to handle reading and burning xbox 360 games?

i will let someone else re-write the flashing and SATA answers.
As far as the external drives for you laptop they may work and they may not. I know a lot of people who have had problems making copies and burning the games with their laptop.
1GB of memory and 1GHz processor speed really isn't that fast, but should be good enough to get the job done.

its dependant on the motherboard in the sense that if your motherboard doesn't have it (which it likely doesn't) then you might as well just buy the adapter.

before you touch anything I suggest you read this tutorial, it helped me a bunch.

For a "SeniorMember", you don't seem too bright, that drive isn't $30
