If you want to convert the file to DVD format and burn it to a DVD disk, try DVD Flick.
There is a short guide included.
When you choose your settings, take care to opt for the correct video format.
North America is 'NTSC' most of the world is 'PAL'

MPEG2 is the format of the video files used by DVD's.
Most of the files downloaded from the net are AVI, DivX or XviD.
These have to be converted to the correct DVD format.
If you have a standalone player that accepts DivX files, then (generally) no conversion is required.
The files are simply burned to a CD or DVD as data.
Note that AVI, DivX and XviD files, when converted to mpeg2, are much larger than the source.

Thanks for your feedback attar,
so am i right to say that when converting AVI, DivX, or XviD files back to DVD format, i'm basically converting them to MPEG-2?? thus all compressed files like AVI, XviD etc, need always to be converted back to MPEG-2 for compatibility, because MPEG-2 is the DVD format???

Yes, AVI is a so called container that holds video files.
DivX and XviD (DivX backwards) are a form of video compression - hence the need for a DivX 'codec'.
Mpeg is another container and MPEG2 is the DVD format.
Note that the MPEG2 files have to be authored by a program to complete the fit to DVD.
