Is flashing my chip really neccesary???

Can anyone tell me wether I have to flash my mod chip or not to be able to load EVOx to my xbox? if so how do i do it, as I have no idea what sort of chip I have. I have EVOx on a TDK CDR-W disc and it wont read the disc, is it because of the disc or maybe something else, it isn't a really dark disc, however it is darker than a normal disc. Anyone help me out?
