I realize I will probley get some flack but here goes. I have been making some serious coasters. Why does for example Sony DVD +R work perfect for all (for me) burning/ripping. But Memorex, Maxell and TDK (all +R,8-16 speed,4.7 GB and 2hrs time) not work ? I use DVD shrink, nero , alcohol. Nothing works when i use those 3 disk types, but toss in a sony and it works no sweat. Have a mountain of those disks and would like to use them. Help please

Those other ones are crap. Your burner doesn't work well with those. Just throw them out. If you have some that are still unopened, bring them back.
You don't mention what type burner you have or if your firmware is up to date. One of my burners just flat out will not burn a Memorex. They used to pride themselves on their audio tapes but now it seems they just don't care.

99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

So only one is a burner. Do you use one to read and the other to burn?
Your Nero log should tell you if you have the latest firmware.

Can't open drive: Won't manually to eject tray or open the drive under windows?

If you got XP:

Go into device manager. Under cdrom/dvd drives-open the tree/ocate that burner that won't open up/double click on it/click driver tab/uninstall drivers/and reboot. See if works after rebooting.

Sometimes these drives get lost and the uninstall/rebooting fixes it.

I have been making some serious coasters.
Explain these coasters.Lots of definitions for a Coaster:

Burn coasters:

1) Failure during the burn-actual burn has taken place.Definitely coaster is you see the discoloration of the dye on the back of disc.
2) Failure during the lead-in phase. No actual burn took place, disc should still be good. Usually firmware needs updated to handle them.

Playback coasters:
3)No disc error when inserting a supposedly good backup onto other drives. It could be a message like: No disc/Dirty disc/Wrong region/Wrong format/or Illegal disc. Make sure the dvd-rw drive that burned them, plays them.
4) Freezing, pixellation, skipping on all stand alone players/dvd drives.
5) Same as #5,but only affecting 1 drive.

Can you use nero and find the MID codes of those sony/memorex/tdk/and Maxell.?

Sony are pretty decent. The other 3 brands, cmagnetics makes some of them..
