Hi there,
I?m having a bit of a problem ripping dvd?s regarding time. When I first started I only had a cd-rw and a dvd-rom. I remember that in the beginning it also took a lot of time to rip dvds so I could turn them into vcds. Then someone gave me some instructions on how to turn the DMA?s and PIO?s, and the ripping speed increased enourmusly with dvd rippers. Later on I bought a DVD-RW, and started ripping with shrinkdvd, and it still ripped at a fine speed. The problem is that I had to format my PC, and now the ripping speeds take twice the time they use to take, both on the DVD-ROM (Pioneer 116) and on the DVD-RW (LG-4040). What am I doing wrong? What can I do to get the old speed back?
Thanks a lot.
Regards.

Make sure your settings are on DMA and not PIO.It sounds like your settings are off again.what format is your pc set-up with,FAT or NTFS? I'm not sure what effect these two different formats could make to how the programs run,but it's possible the software maker preffers one over the other, you'll have to do a little searching to find the answer to this. Maybe a veteran user could chime in and help you out .Good luck!

I have had this problem several times. But in answer to how to do DRM. (I am on XP)Right click my computer, go to device manager go to the plus sign by IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers right click primary IDE go to the next tab and switch to DMA, do the same for the secondary IDE too. One other thingf I did was get the most recent firmware, that helped alot. Hope this helps!

be aware that if you are using one drive to do both functions (rip and write) most recorders are locked to read/rip at 2X max. Most people prefer using a Dvd-rom for reading/ripping as it saves wear and tear to your recorder. also be aware Marianne that if your drives are in PIO mode and simply clicking on the the DMA mode doesn't allow you that option, you may have to delete the drive and whichever IDE controller your ripper resides on,after re-booting XP will re-install these devices and if possible auto update to DMA increasing your drives overall speed and keeping CPU usage to a minimum.

thankyou for your help regarding my slow ripping problem....firstly my computer is set at DMA mode .....so now i`m presuming that the firmware needs upgrading...and this is something I know nothing about....I have read about it and believe you can cause havoc if you don`t know what your doing.....and this is definately something I know nothing about and wouldn`t be game to touch.....so I guess I will be stuck with slowwwwwww ripping until (hopefully) a friend who does know about this decides to visit....thanks again

To improve ripping speed, until you find a better solution, you might try this. Get a hold of Nero and run the spin up/spin down test under Nero utilities (nero cd speed). Have your ripping program open and ready to go before the spin test. As soon as the spin test is done, clip start on the ripping program. (it's important that only one click is required. have your destination folder already chosen). This method works for me. Strange that I never had this problem prior to upgrading from win98SE to winxp sp1.

check the model of your dvd-rom/burner then at google, type in the model number (ex. Lite-On CRX0811) then firmware update. It is just like a software install kind of thing. Just an executable file. Make sure you have the right one or it will say that it cant install.

Hi there,
Thanks a lot for all the answers. I switched to DMA and installed a new ASPI, and it is ripping really fine. I wanted also to install new firmwares both to the DVD player and the recorder, but it seems that it is not as simple as it seems. You got to put them as primary and slaves asnd whatsoever. I know nothing about this! Is it really worth it to install new firmwares? And if so, can anyone halpe me with this?
Thanks

Well the Only reason to upgrade your Firmware is if there is a problem with your Drive that the new firmware fixes or there is a New feature added in the Firmware..as for haveing your Drives set up as master and slave ,if you only have One DVD/CD Drive on it"s own IDE Chanel then it is Probably allready set up as the Master, If it shares the IDE with your Hard drive which it shouldn"t but a Lot of Poeple do it then the drive will be set up as the Slave Drive...Changeing drives from Master to Slave is pretty Easy it is Just a Matter of Changeing the Jumper settings on the Drive and it"s Position on the IDE Cable..Anyone who has a PC should learn how to Take his PC totally Apart and put it back together and Know how to Change/Replace/Upgrade/Configure/install Every component in there PC as it saves a LOT of Trouble and Money in the Future...Some Poeple will Actually Pay A Computer Tech to replace a hard drive or other Component and charge them for a Minimum 1 hours work which is at least $60 which seems like a Big waste of Money when it is Extremely easy to do...Cheers

The master and slave sould already be set so you shouldnt have to worry about that. If you have two cd drives and they are both working, it's pretty likely they are set right. So as for the firmware, like I said check the model number and do a search, shouldnt be too difficult to find. As for building computers dont worry about looking inside. By all means dont be careless, just be careful. If it is metal you can touch it, try to touch only the sides of cards or the motherboard, dont use a magnetized screwdriver when working on it and so forth. I learned how to build computers by reading directions they give you with products and my curiosity. You should do the same.
