US has most Blu-ray awareness

article published on 3 April, 2008

According to Reuters, the media research firm Interpret has revealed that just about 60 percent of American consumers are now aware of Blu-ray as a disc format and that the number of households with Blu-ray players is approaching the 10 million mark. The report, a survey of consumers aged 18-54, is unfortunately outdated already however, as it was conducted in mid-January, Right after ... [ read the full article ]

Sure they're aware. But as an IT tech and A/V installer, I've found that 90% of my customers could care less about buying one until it drops to $100 or less per player. They're just happy to show off their new 52" LCD or whatever to their neighbor.Personally I won't buy a player until they drop [= I can't afford it yet] but even then I prefer not to buy the movies. Good ole Netflix includes the Blu movies in their price.

So your coustomers are paying 10X the price of a Tube TV for a 52 inch HDTV but they are not willing to pay 4X the price for a Blu-Ray player. Sounds like they are stupid or some one is not explaining the benifits of Blu to them.

I see where you are coming from DXR88, I owned a PS3 and was using it on a SDTV. It seamed a waist to have all of that graphical power and waist it on a SDTV. I wound up getting a HDTV because of the PS3. My statement to Hobbes was to point out that owning just half of a great thing is no longer good enough once you learn about the other half. I was not really sure about Blu's benifits at first. I own POTCB in SD, later rented it on Blu. IMO, there is enough difference to justify the extra $300 over a DVD player.

#1. I have over 6 years in PC/electronics installation/retail sales and IT technical work and administration. Of course I explain the benefits. You try to sell a $400-$1000 DVD player to the old couple, the soccer mom who needs a TV replaced. Their not techno-geeks like most of the seasoned posters here. Most of them "just" bought their SD-DVD player in the last six years, and to them it "works fine". They're not interested in another more expensive one, just to have to rebuy all their favorite movies.

#2. They're not stupid, it's just this:
a) Most of the ones who CAN afford the TV are in their 40s to 70s.
b) They're usually happy with cable or sat (I don't know why, but most of them are set in their ways).
c) Most of them have had their last big screen for umpteen years, and just want a replacement. The HDTVs are over 75% of the market easy and they look prettier. You can drill it into people's heads, and half of them still wouldn't even upgrade their cable/sat package to HDTV. People just get set in their ways, and don't want to have to pay that much to change.

I don't think i have seen one tube put on a wall yet either. I have a blu-ray and hd dvd and personelly think flash memory will trump all media that is on a spinning disc.

Hobbes, thanks for the straight up ansewer. It just seams that people would not be happy with a large screen HDTV that never gets the benifit of using the whole screen. DVD and Non-HDTV programing will always leave black bars. Up converting may fill the whole screen but is nothing more than stretching Silly Putty. There is also no need to re-purchase all of their movies as they will play on the Blu-Ray player. Once again, thanks for you mature ansewer. More respect to you.

off topic so sorry but why is it that 99% of people on internet who are no doubt native speakers , don't realise that this english expression is actually " I couldn't care less " and NOT " could care less " - it really bugs me and if you analise it - it doesn't make sense - if you COULD care less then it means that you actually care about something !!!!
