After reading a lot, i cant find a way why flashing firmware is better than a modchip, other than instalation. Like, if you have a flashed console, you are always in risk of being banned the moment microsoft decides to look at your information, or scans for firmware purity, but with a modchip, specifically the NME 360, its only on when your playing backups, and you can have it wired to automcatically disable live the moment a backup is detected. Its also able to turn itself off when playing original games, and if Microsoft decides to scan your system, it will look like a completley orignal unflashed firmware, because it is. A lot of people here seem really ignorant to that fact, and beleive that flashing a firmware is the best way to go, just because its easy and free, but what happens when Microsoft takes action? I think the chips will be the last to be banned, so thats why i'm sticking with modchips.

Anyone else agree or disagree with this?

ya sounds great and all, but plenty of chipped 360s have been banned. as it is not due to firmware, it is more than likely due to bad rips of games that were missing the necessary security information such as the PFI and DMI files. if they were getting banned due to the FW alone, then all of us would be banned, not just a select few.

Exactly, wabashman. It's the games, not the FW that gets people banned.

Yeah, you can be banned because of backups on a chipped xbox, but you can also be banned for that on a flashed xbox. But i think your missing the point, im trying to say that chipped xbox's are more future proof, it will be extremely hard for microsoft to ban all the xbox's with modcchips, when they decide to try to ban them, but it will be very easy for microsoft to ban flashed drives, when they decide to ban them.

i may be mistaken, but werent MANY of the original xboxs banned that were chipped? if im correct that shoots down your theory pretty well. but i could be wrong as i was a sony kid back then until the 360 came out.

I'm not sure, i never owned an xbox, only a PS2 that i modded aswell, and you coudlnt really get banned on a PS2. I dont think the xbox modchips had any auto off feature, the NME 360 automatically turns itself off whenver it is connected to live. All of what i said was about the NME V2 modchip by team underdog.

why does this sound more like an advertisment than a serious question?

I dont understand how it sounds like an advertisment, im just trying to explain the pros of using a modchip over flashing.

They are about the same in my opinion, whether or not you use a modchip you can still get banned. The firmware is the same for both a modchip or just flashing the drive. If you look at the Hitachi 79FL or 79FK drives they require a modchip regardless if you want one or not.In theory Microsoft could ban both methods a modchip or the firmware hack. They have the ability to detect hardware mods, and its possible they can detect firmware hacks.I seen awhile ago people that had NME chips started getting banned, but they fixed it awhile ago.I agree with wabashman on the bad rips part though, because its not always hack that is causing the bans. Its mainly caused by the security sectors that are contained on the games.I have a PS2 and you could get banned from playing online as well, but what you had to do was inject the online key into the games. If you got banned from playing online with Sony though there was a technique that would change the console id so it didn't matter if they banned you or not.

My personal recommendation is that if Live means that much to you, have two 360s. I got banned, on several systems, (me and the RROD, and all of its fixes, are tight), but I am not a huge online gamer. If I have it cool, bu my time is limited to play so if I lose it, I don't miss it much. Now, if you are like my little brother, and laing online with your friends is what you need, buy two systems. Flash one, don't flash the other. Buy the games you want to play online that are great (ie, gears of wars, halos, call of dutys, etc) and backup to your life's content with everything else. With what the modchip costs with shipping, its not a crazy amount more for another system, especially with the price of the arcades. You can even jump on eBay and unload extra power bricks, controllers, etc, and almost recoup enough money that the price of the chip would have been the same as another system. Just my 2 cents.

Yup.. no difference at all.. A little birdie told me that M$ have a way to query the FW version on a dvd drive while the game is online. People have been banned playing original games on flashed firmware in the US.

A chip you can enable/disable is good.. but it's just possible there are other security features in the 360 that we don't know anything about yet.. like for instance a hdd saves check which may contain a drive firmware code that they can verify online too???

I may be being a little over paranoid and thinking out of the box in a way M$ are not capable of.. BUT.. they learned a huge amount from the first xbox.. they had a pretty good relationship with some of the prominent modding sites.. I have communicated by email with a senior member of M$ console division about cooling in the 360.. so I'm not putting anything past them.

They are as capable as you or me of downloading any of these firmwares, and buying the chips and installing them, then the skill comes in reverse engineering a way to detect them. Seeing as they are the onlypeople who know how to read the dvd drive key check that comes out of the cpu encrypted they know more about that white box than we do.

I'm totally with mperagine about having 2.. one for online and one for private offline use.
