Well, the story goes, my current 360 and I have had a war of attrition of sorts, and it seems I have lost. After my initial RROD, I did an xclamp replacement mod, added a Talismoon fan, and XCM addon fan, etc. The RROD returned several times, I reapplied the AS5 and tightened everything up, this worked quite well. Sometimes for a few weeks, the last time for a few months. Now it seems to be dead. Also got banned from live in the meantime, but I digress because thats the price I pay for the way I choose to go about my gaming. Anywho, I am still fiddling with it trying to get it to work, but I recently purchased a premodded system that should be here shortly.
I know it was a noob thing to do, and I have modded many a console in my day, but my pc recently died, and I only have access to Macs and saw no way to perform a flash in the near future (don't think my Pitt professors want to see me down in the computer lab flashing my 360 with the computer lab PCs, and since I'm a grad student I don't enjoy the dorm life where I have floor/roommates willing to help me out, my classmates don't even play games and stare at me like I'm retarded when I do PowerPoints on the success of the video game industry).
My question is, should I go ahead and install the fans, and maybe even remove the xclamps on the new system to try and avoid this from happening again? I know nothing is failsafe (I have had 7 systems now, some before I began modding and some after, of all the ones I fixed the one I kept is the only one not going strong to date). Just wondering if you guys have had good/bad experiences with modding pre RROD, an had any suggestions/advice. I don't post here often, but read through the forums alot, and everyone here has helped this modders crusade against emptying his life savings quite a bit. Any suggestions would be appreciated/helpful. Thanks.

The xmc fans are nice and quiet, and they seem to work pretty well. As for the x clamp fix, that only addresses the issue of the gpu breaking away from the motherboard due to warping (as I'm sure you already know). But if a 360 is correctly ventilated and not overheating, then the x clamp fix actually serves no purpose.

What would worry me is if this 360 already has the fix, is it because it already had an issue with overheating and failing? Did the seller clearly state the condition (or past issues) of this premod?

The premod ws the flash. I am doing everything else myself, just don't have pc access to flash myself right now (mac based).

I see. Well, if you're going to open it anyhow to put the fan in, might as well do the clamps. At the very least it'll benefit from the AS5. I think that crap they use is no better than a stick of gum.

bhetrick is right, if your system is already opened, doing the x-clamps fix can't do any harm (if you know what you are doing).

I'd suggest upgrading the fans, adding a fan shroud, doing the 12v fan mod, and changing the thermal paste.
