Up until recently i had a fat PS2 and a USB memory stick, i just got a Gameshark today and remembered the memory card exploit, looked around, "installed" it, it works, on my PS2, i haven't tried playing any backups yet, it gives me the chills, i tried swapping once before, and i had to take apart the PS2 to snap the little slider thing back in the place because the slide card wasn't done properly and the think popped out of the tracks, anyway, i was wondering, how come the slide card is still needed? im sorry if this sounds really noobish, but i really am an idiot about such things, but, why can't there be a regular "press the open button, insert backup, close drive, play" routine, as far as i know, (unless im missing something) all the loaders out there need you to use the slide/swap technique which seems to be really damaging to the PC, i know there's memor32 and memento, but i just can't afford it, and even if i could, only way i could get it is by buying it online and i just don't buy online.

because the slidecard tricks the system. if you press eject, the disc inside will stop spinning, and the system will clear it's memory from the disc TOC.
with the slidecard, it keeps the disc TOC in memory, but you're able to switch the original with a backup. this bypasses all security checks, and the system thinks the disc is still an original.
ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure
got a whole lot more to list . . .

well that makes sense... i really couldn't think of anything myself but that pretty much explains it, thanks.
while i have a topic, this was probably answered before im gonna search for it right now but in case it wasn't im about to go looking at harddrives, what's better, an internal or external one? my logic tells me that if i have a usb one i could transfer ISOs to it by hooking it up directly to the PC, but my logic is known to be flawed, so im asking.

internal hdd and the network adapter. usb hdd's are slow on the ps2; the ps2 only uses usb1.1.
the hdd must be IDE. SATA drives will not work. also, you must have the network adapter in order to use a internal hdd.
