Running wiikey update on non wiikey modchip

My friend got a modded wii from china.

We don't know what modchip he has in it, and instead of opening it up, what if we assume it's a wiikey and try to run the wiikey firmware update on it. If the modchip was something other than a wiikey would it just say something like "no wiikey installed" or would it mess up whatever modchip is in there?

If there's no wiikey you will get nothing - it won't do anything to any other modchip and in any case, any update would run a test before it wrote the firmware which would fail if the wiikey isn't in. That's if the chip inside was working and could read the wiikey firmware disk as well.
