dvd backups freeze during playback

Hi guys. I've read many replies on "why dvd backups freeze during playback" and absorbed it all in and did what most are suggesting to do to stop the freezing. I'm using Philips dvd-r media (thought it may be good media being that it's sold at supermediastore.com) and lowered my target size to 4200. Most backups play well but there always seems to be a few that just won't cooperate (freezing). Are Philips dvd-r disc of good quality? Is 4200 too low? what the.....

Philips, media is not good quality
if your getting them from supermediastore.com GET Taiyo Yuden, second chioce would be Verbatim and burn at 4x to 8x max.
call supermediastore and tell them your having problems with the Philips media and they should let you exchange it for Taiyo Yudens

Philips, like many others namebrands these days, sublet production of thier discs and just stamp their name on it. It's iffy everytime.
Like Zoso said, Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim, especially if you're already ordering online.

Bad media is always a suspect, you all are right. Have you tried using your backup dvd in another dvd player? Some home dvd players are very picky on what media it wants to play. For example, my dvd-rom is next to flawless, versus the $30.00 special at Wal-Mart. Also i find it necessary to turn other applications off, such as screensavers,media players, etc... I hope you find the problem. I know there are some great people here that can help answer just about any question.

I use Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media and they played in 100s of all the DVD players i have tryed

It has been my experience that the cheap standalone players are less picky that middle to high-end players. I used to use the -R format exclusively, and they played in all the players i use...except one. That's when i started with the +R's and began booktyping everything to DVD-ROM.

before you do anything else, do a "test disk" run on your phillips dvd backup. You can do this with nero. To get flawless playback you need to get a score in the 90%.
I used phillips blank dvd's about 2 years ago, back then the company making them was CMG (the media made by that company is better known as cromags) it's the worst brand of dvd's. I was getting test scores in the 20% some even as low as 0.
Only way to be sure what kind of dvd's you have have is to do a test disk on them. As far as quality for dvd backups 1.)Taiyo Yuden 2.)verbatim 3.)sony .

buying the DVD plus R online is more expensive than the DVD dash R thats why i use them

The Philips / Magnavox brand single layer dvd are mostly made by CMC Magnetics and are garbage. You are rightly advised by other readers to use Lightning UKs imageburn for dvd burning. Also read the forums both here and on imageburns ww site.
The playback issues are dvd player dependant. Some disks play on some machines. I have found over the years that Panasonic machines are the most choosy what they will playback.
Be certain you have the latest firmware on your burner and if you are using a standalone recorder for playback, also check the firmware for any updates. I personally stick with Verbatim, as L-UK advises, TY is also an excellent brand.
