I am a novice with basic experience in home movie production. I received a new Samsung digital camcorder model SCD23 for Christmas. I bought a Adaptec 4300 fireware card which plugs into the DV port of my camera. I have been successful in capturing files into a couple of video editing programs such as Microsoft Movie maker which came with the XP software - was able to burn to a CD and played back using the same program. I am now trying the MGI VideoWave 4 software which was bundled with the FireConnect 4300 card.

I have started reading from various internet sites about all the various types of "codec" conversions and etc. I understand the basics, however, I would like for someone in the video/media field to point me in the right direction. Basically, I wish to do the following.

1. video/audio editing from my DV camera
2. Capture VHS, 8mm tapes to CD's
3. Program to burn these to CD-R or CD-RW I don't have a DVD burner yet. I would like to be able to play thse CD-R or CD-RW to my DVD player...

I realize these are two areas: First, I need a simple and direct approach for #1...The best software for video capturing from my digital camcorder, editing, and finally burning to a CD-R or CD-RW my finished product...I have read about Roxio Version 6 will do everything, but not sure...I hear so many pluses and minus about various programs..I just want a simple and direct approach as to the best direction to take...

Later, I want to do analog capturing....I don't have the abilities with this dv camera to do analog to digital pass through...So I would have to get some type of analog board...Maybe somebody will address these two issues...If this is too much, then just do the first area....

Thanks for any assistance to these projects...I know there is somebody out there in the digital world that can point me in the right direction....

All you need to Do is capture your Footage to DV AVI useing whatever software you choose and then after editing render your Project as a Type 2 DV AVI file and then use a Mpeg encoder Like TMPGEnc to encode the File to Mpeg1/VCD or Mpeg2/SVCD and then Burn the Files to CD-R in VCD or SVCD Format and then Play them in your DVD player...You could use the encoder in Video Wav but it is a pretty crappy program and it"s Mpeg encodeing is even worse so it is better to use an external program Like TMPGEnc to encode the Files to VCD or SVCD depending on what your DVD Player supports...
If your Camcorder has analogue Inputs you can use it as an Analogue/Digital converter to transfer VHS tapes or Hi8 ECT to your PC to edit and make VCD/SVCD"s out of them....If you have anything More specific to ask then ask away....Cheers

I have the exact same Samsung camcorder and am trying to accomplish one of the same tasks as the first person in this thread.

I am still trying to figure out if this is possible with this camera. I am trying to capture some VHS video through my DV camcorder and then into my PC.

I have tried hooking up the VCR's out ports to the camera's audio/video single port and then using the firewire feature of the camera and connecting that to a firewire card in my PC. I can not see any video playing through the camera's LCD screen, nor on the caputre program (Windows movie maker or MGI Photosuite).

Am I stuck purchasing a capture card for my system? I was hoping not to have to. Also, if this is the only answer to this problem, what capture card should I look into that's not too expensive?
