I would say really anything that will fit in your box. Has to be an standard ata (IDE) hard drive. The max size for standard ata is 750 gigs which is completely overkill for any xbox. I usually mod xbox's with the maxtor 300 gig 16mb cache drives or the western digital 500gig 16mb cache drives. Really 500 is as big as you should go. You don't need a lockable hard drive since you're using a mod chip so you shouldn't have any issues finding a hard drive.

sry for the dbl post i also forgot to ask if a 1TB hdd more specifically (ST310005N1A1AS-RK)would work since it is on sale for less then a 750GB or is it to large and could not be partition correctly without errors?

I told you 500 gig is as big as you need to go, and no you can't go 1tb because it needs to be a ata drive. If it has a standard ide cable then it can be used. Sata and esata won't work, they use a completely different cable.

This is the drive i use, it works great.

Bad idea actually some of the larger hds can corrupt themselves. Plus the sata to ide board is pretty big, if you have never seen one when installed it's about double the size of the hd. If you were to modify the board to fit it would work but in xbox's clearance is always an issue

Really who needs a 1tb drive in their xbox, think about the heat and the loading times and choose a smaller drive.
