Splitting large files.

Hi all

I am looking for help with splitting large files (Audio Books typically) down to acceptable chunks so I won't have to start from the beginning every time I want to continue listening. this will also help when certain files are too big to burn onto one cd.
I have been told it can be done but I can't see how?
