so really how big of a pain in the ass is it to install and read the drive key from the motherboard

Depends on who's doing it. I've been installing mod chips for quite awhile now. Installing an Infectus would be fairly simple for me.

Now, if it's someone who hasn't had any experience, it's a whole different story. It'd be too easy for them to mess up their board.

well i have installed chips in a few Xbox's,a couple PS2's,Gamecube and just got done with a D2C Key In A Wii

If you're comfortable doing PS2's, then an Infectus should be fine for you.
