I can't get my Starview The Box PVR to work, or in fact do anything!

I've got the guide that is in different steps,
1) Connect PC & STB with USB Cable
2) Main Menu-> Select ?HDD Mode Change PVR?-> Press ?0000? on the RCU
( Showed ?HDD Mode Change PC? )
3) In PC
a) Showed new Local Disk on the PC ( ?F:W? or ?E:W? )
b) Copy new Firmware in the Local Disk.
4) Remove the USB Cable
5) Main Menu-> Select ?HDD Mode Change PC?-> Press ?0000? on the RCU
Once ?HDD Mode Change PVR?, STB is automatically re-boot.
6) Main Menu-> ?Select HDD Interface? ->?Select Upgrade from HDD?
Select ?new firmware -> Press ?0000? on the RCU
7) Automatically upgraded & re-bootand

I'm using a laptop with a USB cable to the STB. But in the main menu where HDD Mode Change is supposed to change when I put in 0000 on the remote, nothing happens.
I definatley need to update the firmware on it, its brand new with Jan 07 firmware. Does anyone know what I can try to get my box ready to accept my firmware upload? It doesn't even show as 'drive' with the USB connected.ù
Also at present I haven't put an HDD in the box to do recording, but I don't expect this will make a difference will it?
Many thanks for looking,
Andy

You will need a hdd installed to upload firmware via usb. The other way to update the firmware is by using the serial port. You put the box into flash moe then transfer the file to it.

Ah, thanks szyslak,
Before reading this I thought this might be the case, so went out and bought a drive, I'll install it tomorrow and hopefully post up that all is well...
Many thanks,
Andy

Yep you definately need a HDD installed, after that its quite easy via USB to install the OCT 07 firmware into the firmware folder that the box adds to the disk when it formats the drive (Hold menu button on switching on). Everything then follows as per the instructions you find on here.
I'm very chuffed with it, though don't know how to get a description of what has been recorded yet. It just shows the channel and time so far. I'll get there soon though, maybe with a future update?
Thanks
Andy
