i made up 12 copies of a home movie in SVCD format. They all work great on my multi-region sony DVD player, but when i sent them to australia, only half of them worked via the DVD player (still worked using Windows Media Player 9)

All the DVD players it didnt work on were different brands - could it be a muti-region thing? (forgive me if this is a stupid question...im new to this)

I have no idea why, but i need to find out so i can fix it soon...I'm using Ulead Video Studio & burn the SVCD's on PAL...can anyone help?

1. I dont think region stuff applies to SVCDs
2. There is the NTSC/PAL issue. I dont remember if Ausralia is PAL or not
3. Try burnig slower, a lot of standalones have issues with SVCDs that are burned fast
4. Could even be the media that its incompayible with
5. What make/model player does your buddy have?

ASUS A8V Deluxe, A64-3500 @ 2.65
1GB KingMax PC3700
640GB [4x160GB, 7200, 8MB]
XFX 6800GT 256MB

Hmm...i burnt the CD's in PAL format to play on PAL in Australia.

I dont remember seeing an option to burn slower but i will have a look - what speed do you recommend?

Models in which it doesnt work are Panasonic & Sharp which were both multi-region. The Sony's are OK.

any further help?

Try 1x, but I doubt that is the problem. I'd probably say the DVD player that your mate has doesn't play SVCD's which I'm not sure is rare or not.

Hiya Guys,

There are two types of SVCD.

Type 1 has this folder structure:
EXT
MPEG2
SEGMENT
SVCD

Type 2 has this folder structure:
EXT
MPEGAV
SEGMENT
SVCD

The differences being,
type 1 has files named AVSEQ01.MPG in the MPEG2 folder
type 2 has files named AVSEQ01.MPG in the MPEGAV folder

Type 1 is the default, and most common; type 2 is sometimes found in Asia.

Some players will play type 1.
Some players will play type 2.
Some will play both.
Some will play neither.

It can be a bit confusing......

Have Fun...

Life is just more of the same:

There's also the question of bitrate. Some players don't care if the video is within the SVCD specs (~2600kbps if I remember correctly), which makes sense if you consider that they're using the same hardware to decode it with as they use for DVD files which have a much higher bitrate. On the other hand, some players won't be able to play an SVCD that isn't standards compliant. And of course, some standalones won't play them at all, or will require using the VCD header trick because they don't actually support SVCD.

It doesn't sound like the last part applies here since some of them did play, so you might want to check the bitrate. You can use bitrate Viewer you can open the MPEG-2 file that's on the SVCD with it and it will tell you what the peak bitrate is. You can download it at:

hey guys ...

i'm also having trouble playing back a SVCD that i made. I'm not sure if my dvd player (pioneer) supports SVCD but it plays my vcds fine.

I get really jerky playback ... if i hit the fast forward button once it's normal ...almost but there's the arrow on the screen. Is it my fps that is causing this? I made it a nonstandard 23.97 mpeg2 file @480x480 ...

also... the playback cuts off the bottom of the screen ... is 480x480 NTSC?

If your friend's dvd player plays some of the cds but not all ... you already know that it plays SVCD... it must be something different with the media/ the speed burnt/ or the way you created the files.

Since you're not sure about SVCD compatibility you should start by looking up your player in the database here:
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers

Since you know it plays VCD you could also try the VCD Header Trick from this guide:

Wow thanks for the link ... it helps a lot ... some guy managed to get it to work .. with some hack that i have no idea where he got ... the only hack i see for the dvd player is the region free one ...

well ... i'm going to try this VCD header thing... if i have the file as mpeg2 already ... i can just use TMPGEnc and simplex the file right?

Thanks! Hope it works!

From what I understand you are correct about just using TMPGEnc for the VCD header trick. My player doesn't play VCD so I've never needed to try it.
