DVD Drive scratching, can I fix it?

I have two MS28 drives here. One is having difficulty reading and I have to continually eject and reinsert a disc to make it read it. So I bought a new one and put the board from the old one into the new one. It worked fine but I left it for a day, came back and now it's scratching discs. I'm just wondering does anything scratch the disc apart from the laser? These scratches are round the outside of the disc, the very rim of it. Also it makes a loud grinding noise. If it's possible it's not the laser I was considering placing the laser in the old drive and seeing if it worked.

it could be the laser but i would say more likely it is something that is just not put back together right. Something is a little off either making the disc spin a bit off center and touching something, or something in the drive is just not right and toughing the disc as it spins.

Well i've pretty much given up on it anyway, i'm gonna try and get in touch with the people I bought it off and see what they say, if they're not going to help i'll have to find some other way.
