MKV Playback Out of Sync

Hi,
I'm trying to play some .mkv files, but without much success viewing 1080p movies. After a while the cpu reaches max and then the video goes out of sync. I'm running Vista on a XPS M1330 with Duo Core 2.3, and 4GB of RAM. I would have thought that this machine would be capable of running these types of movies without any problems?

I've downloaded TCMP, MPC and a pile of other players with the same results. I have the latest CCCP installed and I can see the Haali Media Splitter running when the movies are playing. I had tried ffdshow previously.

I've read some of the other forum posts and I couldn't find a definitive answer that I was looking for.

Surely it can't be that my machine isn't able to handle it? Do I need a different codec?
