Ok, I'm in the market for a digital slr camera. Before I go out and start researching this, what are some of the things I should look for? I need a camera that will pick up lots of definition. I won't be doing much fast action shots, mainly stills.

Thanks guys..

**update**

I was thinking this camera might do the trick? Should be more then enough.

Nikon - 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera - Black - D40

That looks like it would do well for what you want it for. Something you may want to consider checking into is how readily available accessories are for it. I.E. alternate lenses, filters, etc. If that stuff is easy to come by and not astronomical in price, i'd grab this one if i were you.

Yea, I was looking at that. Stuff seems to be pretty expensive, when it comes to lenses and such. Definitely an expensive hobby. But for what I need to do, this should be plenty from what I've been reading so far today.

Thanks 7th!

No problem bro!

I'm not as knowledgeable with the digital SLR's as i was about the old school, fully manual, 35mm film cameras...but i still play around a bit.

You give me a Cannon AE-1 and i'm like Chuck Norris with a shutter!

the Canon AE-1 was my first camera I had back in 1977! I loved it and took thousands of great shots with it. And because I had that camera I stuck with Canon and now using the 30D. here are some resent shots I took while I was in Tampa this past weekend:

and a good place to take shots and meet people is to join the Meetup group for photography in your area at Meetup.com! tomorrow is a meetup for taking pictures at a park and a nature resurve.....here are other shots from my other visits:

http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/381/img0719ehw4.jpg

why am I showing you these resent pixs? because it's not just the camera that takes the picture.... it's the lens! I have been to zoos where there was hardly any good lighting around... just shadows and still got great shots of animals in it's cages because of the lens and the settings the camera can do! like these:

http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/3055/img1010hl1.jpg
http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/7895/img1174mg6.jpg

it's all in the quality of your equipment! the lens I have is over $2,500.00 when it was new.... you can get it now for just under $2350.00 if you look around! soooooo the camera is good .... I don't even have the 40D but the 30D takes great shots and with the lens I have I can really get some nice shots in. I always stuck with the Canon cameras. My brother was the head photographer of the S.S. Shangrilha (a retired aircraft carrior) in the '60s and he always used Nikon cameras and lenses. So even today he has a Nikon DSLR set up. It's all a matter of choice!
