Hey everyone!

My PS2 is slim version SCPH-77001, and I'm from US. I would like to get a cheap modchip so I can play backup games. That's all I need it for. I don't care about homebrew and all other stuff. I just wanna play backups. I heard something about the laser going bad with some modchips? Can someone please explain all this stuff to me or let me know a site where I could read up on this.

I would also like to hook up a external hard drive to my PS2 so please let me know which mod chip will let play ISOs off the USB hard drive. I was looking at Duo 3 Ultra chip but not sure if that will work with external hard drive.

Thank you!

The laser is not an issue for you as you have a V14 PS2. This only happened to the V12/V13 PS2's but was easily fixed by installing a laser fix.

The Duo 3 Ultra is a pretty good chip (got 2 systems with them). It will load your backups and let you use homebrew. As for playing off an external HD, you will need a program like USB Extreme. You can get it for free on the net and load it since you have the Duo (it will come in and .ELF file or you can burn it).

However I do not recommend and external HD, as many users have reported it having horrible compatibility and slow loading times.

Thanks for your input. I just ordered Duo 3 Ultra, can't wait to get it. I also have to figure out how to connect a IDE hard drive to my ps2.

You mean an external USB HD don't you. Cause you can't add a HD through an IDE connection on a slimline V14+. This can only be done on a V12/V13 slimline.

I didn't know that. I guess I just need to buy some blank DVD9s and I'll be ok!

I don't think the duo will handle DVD9's. If you wanted to play DVD9 backups though you could rebuild said game. This would bring down the size of the .iso and allow you to burn onto a DVD5. It is also great experience in further understanding the file structure of PS2 games.

Does that mean I have to rip out the content of the games? Or there's dummy files that are not necessary to run the game? Also is there any tutorials how to do that?

Often times there will be dummy files that can be removed (Bloodrayne 2) from a game. Though there are times when content has to be removed like cutscenes or picture quality must be reduced.

Here is an awesome guide on rebuilding. Even has pictures :)

Same place I got mine from, took forever to get the chip though (like 15 days for me).
It does say it supports DVD9, but I'm pretty sure it would say DVD9 backup(s). Don't know for sure though as I've always rebuilt by DVD9's to DVD5's.

Most games are DVD5 anyway. I just need to find out how to rebuild God of War 1 and 2.

It's not going to be hard for you to find guides on how to rebuild those games. Considering they are a playstation franchise. ;)

Found this for god of war 1.

Found this for god of war 2.
