When I play a dvd with PowerDVD, I can't get any sound. I can get sound when I play an mp3 file and while playing video games. I can also get sound from playing videos on Youtube but I get nothing when I play a dvd.
When I play a dvd using InterActual player, I get a message saying, "Error PL4014: Playback failed due to an error with the audio subsystem. Your currently installed audio driver may not be compatible with DirectX. Please close any DirectSound applications that are using the sound card. If the problem persists, you may need to upgrade or reinstall your sound card driver." After getting this message I made sure DirectX and my soundcard drivers were fully updated. I also shut down all programs through msconfig and rebooted but the problem persists.
When I try to play a dvd with WMP, I get an error message saying, "DVD-video playback graph has not been built yet." I checked the Microsoft site to get some info on this error but there isn't any. It just says "additional info is not available for this error."

My sound card is a Realtek AC'97. I realize it's a dated sound card but it's always worked before when playing dvd's. Sometimes when trying to view online videos, like game review vids at gamespot.com, I get sound but no video.

Can anyone tell me what might be the problem? Thanks in advance.

OS: WinXP Home SP2
DirectX 10
GFX: Radeon 9600XT
Sound: Realtek AC'97
CPU: P4 3.0 HT

Check the Control panel Add/Remove to see if AC3 Filter is installed.
If it isn't, it wont do any harm to install it - although I suspect that PowerDVD doesn't it.

Thanks for the response. I checked add/remove and it wasn't there so I installed AC3 Filter but it had no effect. Appreciate the suggestion though. Any other ideas what might might be causing the problem? What type of audio codec or whatever do I need installed?

Open DXDIAG and check out the music and sound tabs.

Sorry davexnet I didn't see your response under the bulky advertisement that pushed you onto a 2nd page. Thanks for the response. I tried dxdiag and all tests passed.

Is it only dvd that doesn't play? What about avi wmv's , etc.
Do they play OK?

What dvd playback filters do you have installed?
The problem could be there.

Download and run Filmerit and see if it finds any errors.

Try 'VLC' media player.

Looks like I got dvd audio now. I don't know what fixed it but it worked after I went to microsoft's site and installed a bunch of optional updates to WinXP. I don't think it was DirectX because updating that was one of the first things I did after doing a factory restore.

Anyway, I downloaded Filmerit and VLC media player. Thanks to all for the help.

Looks like I jumped the gun. It doesn't work after all. I ran Filmerit and came up with 9 filter errors. Here's a list of errors shown by Filmerit:

Audio Compressors -> AC3 -> Codec File = -> Error #S04 - File not found

DMO Acoustic Echo Canceller -> Microsoft Acoustic Echo Canceller -> #Error F10 - No filterdata

DMO Audio Capture Effects -> No Name -> #Error F07 No clsid for the filter object & Error F09 - Corrupt clsid.
Also under No Name -> Server File= -> #Error S02 - No ImProcServer32

DMO Audio Decoders -> QuickTime audio decoder filter -> #Error F24 - InputType DMO not found & #Error F26 - OutputType DMO not found

DMO video decoders -> DMO JPEG video decompressor -> #Error F24 - InputType DMO not found & #Error F26 - OutputType DMO not found

Video compressors -> DMO JPEG video compressor -> #Error F24 - InputType DMO not found & #Error F26 - OutputType DMO not found

WDM Streaming mixer device -> Microsoft kernel wave audio mixer -> #Error F10 - No Filterdata

Could any of those errors be causing the problem? I'm not sure why it's showing that I have a missing AC3 codec file. As part of the troubleshooting process I installed AC3 filter 1.46 as well as the Windows codec pack with AC3.
