I'm sorry if this breaks some rules, I know I should read all the other posts. If it does break rules and you want to close the thread, I understand, it's just that I have 3 finals in the next 48 hours and litterally don't have 40 minutes to spare.
Anyway, here's my question: somebody is selling a modded wii, and I'm wondering if the firmware versions make a difference, and if there have been ANY issues of being caught by nintendo when going online with a backup. Also, what do the firmware versions affect?
If this thread is closed, I will definitely read through some other discussions after my finals are done, but in the meanwhile I would REALLy appreciate some comments.
not an expert but will go with what i know of it and whats worked for me.
there are 2 seperate firmwares, the WiiKeys firmware, and the Wii's firmware.
the WiiKey firmwares come out and are generally kept up to date http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/597460 there. sometimes a new game will have some new protection or something and will require a firmware update for the chip. can be easily updated by burning to a dvd and following the instructions, helps to have a gamecube controller handy though, but not nessecary.
the Wii firmwares come from either online updates (the safest way to update your console) or from certain games with the update on the disc. (not a problem if youre only playing same region games as your console, but can get a little iffy playing out of region games, but there are tools you can use to patch the iso's). These usualy effect stuff as system performance or code exploits, but do not effect the performance of any of the chips that i know of.
as far as i know, there have been no issues of being "caught" playing online or anything.
The firmware of the Wii makes no difference at all as long as it's fully working.
But depends what the chip is - in some cases you might well be buying a console with a chip that is no longer supported and won't be running some of the latest games or upcoming ones.

I sure we can all come up with reasons why we can't reach :)
Just my 2 cents but it's in your best interest to know about what your buying before you buy it by doing some research.
Look at the 2 threads lano12 linked to - a good start.
