I have a Wasabi modchip installed with the option to output usa type signal (or whatever d-u-u-h). I think that this takes care of any bricking problem, but I cannot find any documentation for the Wasabi.

Other opinion?
I have no idea what you are talking about... wasabi will have a region override option like all chips and that has to be off to ensure you don't run out of region disks.
Read this thread to understand what bricking is...
What am I talking about? I read the bricking article. I says an update from a different region bricks your Wii.
What I mean my regional signal:
<i>It is based on 'regular' NTSC, but is slightly different. The black level and blanking level of the NTSC-J signal are identical (at 0 IRE), as they are in PAL, another video standard, while in American NTSC, black level is slightly higher (7.5 IRE) than blanking level. Because of the way this appears in the waveform, the higher black level is also called pedestal. Since the difference is quite small, a slight turn of the brightness knob is all that is required to enjoy the "other" variant of NTSC on any set as it is supposed to be; most watchers might not even notice the difference in the first place.</i>
It seems to me that an update for a different region might only differ by signal coding. If this is the case having a chip that converts one kind of signal coding to another would take care of the bricking problem. Then again the update may specifically look for the name of the system and brick if the name is wrong.
regarding turning on region override Guess I am pwn'ed. I dripped some solder there.
But in any case... Bricking isn't caused by a video issue. The conole itself takes an update from a disk not intended for it. The console region does coincide with the video output but believe me, it doesn't matter how you wire up your video output, taking an update from out of region risks bricking your Wii. If you have region override on then just be careful not to take updates from out of region disks.
