People Keep talking about AEC or something that improves the quality when you rip from original DVD. I tried every version I can find and messed around with many settings, I can't seem to find anything except this little option "Enable overlapped I/O"

When you click on Backup, click on Quality Settings. Then put a check in the box that says Compress video with high quality adaptive error compenstaion. In the drop down box you can choose the quality.

99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

This ONLY applies when im shrinking or compressing right? If I'm making exact replica of Dual Layer, it doesn't matter.

Correct but don't use DVD Shrink to make a dl backup. Let ImgBurn do the work.

ImgBurn does a much better job of setting the LB than Shrink.

k so, imgburn for DL full copies...

DVD Shrink for removing stuff or minor compression.

DVD remake for further removal of unwanted stuff

DVD Rebuilder with CCE for moderate to heavy compressions ....

Any other suggestions?

burn at 2.4X OR 4X MAX using DL media or 6x to 8x using SL media

best DL media is Verbatim

best SL media is Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim

The problem with using dvd shrink for DL backups, is the burn engine that is being used.Dvd shrink does not burn and tons of users swear that it does. Lots of peeps like me use the older version of nero6 and have dvd shrink set to autoburn, after dvd shrink finishes encoding to hd.
If I slapped in a DL backup using dvd shrink,I'd coaster that DL blank, usually at the layer break. Now nero 7/8 is suppose to handle the layer break for DL backups. Dvd shrink can be set to autoburn with copytodvd, dvd decrypter, and rigged up for imgburn. I'm not sure how copytodvd handles DL burning.

If the AEC enhancements are grayed out, then there's no compression.Any compression, then they'll be lit up.

Compressed backups: Dvd shrink, but has trouble with some of the newer encryptions over the last couple years. A background ripper like anydvd fixes that, but other programs mentioned above also take care of it.With compression, the longer the total backup process time.Using the AEC enhancements like Max smoothness and Max sharpness, backup times will take a lot longer-depending on your pc: Processor speed and Ram. Reathoring for main movie only/AC3 English only, will reduce compression, and if it's still high, those AEC enhancements help out a lot.

Non compressed backups like DL and those smaller low budget dvd-5 flicks:

Dvd decrypter in Mode/ ISO/ read- to rip to harddrive and Mode/ ISO/ write, locate MDS files and burn away. It's an older program and may have issues with newer encryptions.

ImgBurn is very similar, same creator of dvd decryper, but improved. ImgBurn can't remove encryption, but background rippers like anydvd does the job for it.This process is also faster and easier on your recources. My P3 celeron pc actually rips faster than my Athlon 3300+ main, when backing up noncompressed backups with both dvd decrypter and imgburn.

Say you want to re-rip some of your backups for another copy, imgburn would be the fastest and effective option, except for OTF- On the Fly.

depends on the compression, under 70% i would

I use Max Sharpness most of the time if over 10%.Less than that, then no enchancements.

Max Smoothness occasionally- Lord of rings trilogy/Harry Potters. I never tried the other 2. Max smoothness is a little intensive on my backup athlon 3000+ pc. Most people won't tell a difference between the 2. Someone with a fancy tv or Big screen, may be able to tell a difference. It takes a little longer, but well worth it you're compressing higher than 30%.
With using dvd shrink, the analyzing and encoding will max out your processor to 95%-100% of it. That's why it's recommended not to multi-task during the dvd backup process. Burn engine only takes 2%-5% of your processor, but still not recommended to multitask during that step.
Shrink harder for pcs than other programs like dvd decrypter and imgburn. If you check around the forum, you'll see a ton of people having pc shutdowns, black screens, and blue screens when using dvd shrink or pc gradually slows down to a crawl.

Some people get confused about the compression of dvd shrink. When you open disc ,look to top right of the page for " compression".Just below that it says Video-and usually it's set for automatic. Notice that number with the % sign to the right of it. If dvd shrink shows 100,then no compression=AEC enhancements grayed out. If dvd shrink shows 75,then there's 25% compression that's going to be performed.Lower that number, higher the compression.
Lots of people think if shrink says 75% then it is being compressed to 75%. Just gotta reverse it.

If shrink dips below 75,then max smoothness and max sharpess will help out.

Note what the number was for entire disc, then reauthor, drag main movie over and click on compression tab. You'll see the number raise. Tick off AC 2,foreign stuff, directors, commentary, even start/stop point and the number will rise with the decreasing of compression.

Most of my backups are main movie only,AC 5.1 CH english only,ending/beginning credits cut,and sub picture ticked if they're over 8 mbs. The 2 mb subpictures usually means crap. The 8 mb+ english subpictures usually means the film has very little english,so you'll need the subtitles to read it.

Example:Apacolypto, syriana, path finder, and every future Mel Gibson directed movie, LOL!
