VHS to DVD - how (simplest, decent quality)?

I have seen a number of devices marketed, which claim to make it easy to transfer VHS tape material to DVD.

I would be happy to settle for the VHS material on my PC. Then being digital, it would be a snap to edit and burn it.

Here is one device that looks good:

The problem is that I have read some reviews in which users detailed the difficulties they had with the device.

What do forum users do / use, to transfer VHS to DVD?

Want an honest answer? Use a dvd recorder (and some of those macrovision removal boxes) unless you have lots of time and a really kicking pc.

Anything less than a 2.4gig cpu and 2 gigs of ram is a waste of time.. believe. I have tried it. You also need a hell of a lot of hdd space. Uncompressed analog video capture can run to 5.5Mb PER FRAME! depending on the quality you want.

Somebody told me about mainconcept (google.. I don't know where it is) which we tried and had some success with until running out of hdd space and time. (and patience.. it reduced us to crying blood almost)

Not fun when you compare that to plugging your vcr into a dvd recorder and hitting record ;)

So there is no cheap method? Ok. I guess that's doable.

Given that there seem to be so many connections around, is it as simple as:
- taking your tri-colour (red, yellow and often white) cord, plugging one end into the audio and video "out" on your VCR and
- plugging the other end into the audio and video "in" on your DVD-Recorder... or...

is there some other sort of cord and some other sort of connection that would make life easier?

I get the idea, though I am not sure that the folks concerned(because it's not me who is interested - just me who will end up doing it) have a DVD-Recorder.
