Hi there I am not new to this forum, but havent been on here for over a year and opened up a new account, so I know pretty much how it all works here,

I have a PSP which I downgraded to V1.50 ages ago at least a year ago. and to be honest life passed me by and the PSP has bene untouched for ages, I have run some homebrew software so I could run ROMS from NES etc.

It seems everything has moved on ALLOT and I dont know what the right way to go is at the moment, I have seen some people backing up games they own to their memory stick so no need to carry stacks of UMD's about, this looks handy to me I thought then I hear about custom Firmware. I dont want to trust what I have seen elsewhere and end updating and bricking or not being able to go back. So I am asking here if I should be upgradiung firmware or if I can stay where I am with it?

Sorry for the long winded question

Regards John

Well, you should upgrade your PSP to a custom firmware :)
1.50 is way way way outdated and even if you use the latest Devhook, you'll not be able to play all games >_<

You can update to a custom firmware :)
Most of the PSP users are using custom firmwares and well, it's really trusted and absolutely no harm is caused to your PSP :D
You can play homebrew games, .iso games and many other things :)
There is a "full-speed" GBA emulator for the PSP too :D
Even "full-speed" SNES emulators are there :D
Also, PSX games too work "full-speed" on the PSP :)

HERE is a good guide to update your PSP to a custom firmware :)

I would recommend 3.90m33-3 as I'm using it and also, you can play "God Of War" and many such latest games on it :)
And the custom firmware is stable too :D

Tough call on FW.

I was running 3.80m33-5. It played PSX games fine, my emulators ran great, I was able to run IRShell (really awesome program) flawlessly. Had no issues with ISO's or CSO's.

I got bored one day and upgraded to 3.90m33-3 for no real reason. Now I have time machine on it (also a really awesome program) that allows me to run older homebrew that would otherwise be impossible on 3.80m33. Also the addition of skype is pretty cool. It's also able to run ISO's, PSX games, and emulators just as well.

In the end it really boils down to whether or not you'll use Skype and Time Machine. If neither of those interest you then I'd go with 3.80m33-5 because IRshell really is great, much nicer interface than the XMB. Just my 2 cents though, what do I know.

many thanks for the advice, I have just followed the guide and got as far as putting 3.52m33 on, all went well with no problems.

If I boot the psp and goto system information it still syas system software version 1.50 is this normal or has it not worked? I dont want to steam through it if its not gone on properly. I was thinking I would see a difference somewhere
