Apologies for posting here for the inappropriateness, but seems legal pressure rather than lawfulness is resulting in pretty much the elimination any decryption issues from being openly discussed.

If I overlooking a forum, please let me know.

And if 'hiding out' here could result in potentially compromising the forum and this post is removed, I'll respect that, so here goes.

I currently have both DVDDecrypter (v3420) and ImgBurn (2400) installed. Didn't and still haven't detected any issues when installing ImgBurn (regardless that ImgBurn did prompt/asking if I wanted to uninstall 'Decrypter).

I just recently installed DVD Flick (v1221) and initially it seemed to work fine, producing a freely playable DVD-R from a decrypted DVD movie. But now I'm seeing that it no longer detects/lists my plugnplay burner, which leaves 'Flick left to merely being useful at initiating ImgBurn's HD created iso's.

No idea how to try and get the burner to again list in the drive box as while the box's dropdown will open, it's empty plus there's no browse button to point to the burner.

Regardless of that, even though 'Flick still sort of works, I'm also noticing it crashing/exiting w/o prompt or event errors showing up in Windows event log. The abrupt exiting happens when I've tried adding (edit>add) what lists as an entirely compatable vob.

I suppose it's exiting because it initially prompted an issue with 2 of the 4 vobs (duh, I didn't denote what), but regardless, it seems 'Flick somehow flags such vobs and/or has the ability for recalling them and their fuzzified issue. So unless 'Flict is actually corrupted, that might be the explanation as to why ended up repeatedly exiting the program each time I try adding any one of those vobs.

I'm more inclined to believe the issues in backing up MGM's DVD's (their 'Species' series) points to their being somehow slightly resistant to decryption especially since the only way I can get the backups to freely play is by resortiing to using SUPER (set for converting to "DVD compliant vob").

Note after using SUPER on the decrypted vobs, 'Flick reacted to 2 of the 4 vobs (both Decrypter's and ImgBurn's) and did so repeatedly even after closing the 'Flick projects, trying to reload them, still it would crash.

Note also that SUPER listed decrypted vob bit rate as 9800 kbps, despite my setting it's conversion to 9796, the initital Gb+ sized vobs converted to .8GB's and yet 'Flick indicated them at some 3800 kbps. The only two changes I made for the conversion were for audio mp2 (from AC3) and a but rate of 164 (from 328).

Very puzzling, but then I did get my DVD (more or less suitable) backed up, even though the resulting video bit rate appreciably reduced quality of the 3.7GB files, now at 2.7GB.

Yes, I would like cheese with my wine.

Don't use 'DVD Decrypter' for ripping the disk.
Use 'DVDFAB HD Decrypter' - and let IMGBurn replace 'DVD Decrypter' as the preferred burning choice from DVD Shrink.

'DVD Flick' uses it's own self contained version of IMGBurn to optionally burn the disk.
You may want to uninstall the IDE controller that the burner is connected to, then reboot - the drivers will be reinstalled and perhaps the drive will be detected again

2nd time that's been mentioned as windows lists the usb burner "type" listing as a "cd drive" regardless that a dvd is inserted. I think it sometimes or used to type it as a CD/DVD-ROM drive and I mention this as I recently discovered MSWMM reporting "a recordable CD drive was not detected" when I tried burning a vcd.

Aaand, when I plop in reliable dvd-r or cd-r, the columns in window my computer pane don't list total size, free space or file sysyem details, but right clicking the drive then lists the always dispalying "CD Drive" w/properties of used & free at zero bytes.

Forgive me, but even as exasperating as this may sound, I'm avoiding reinstalling the IDE Controller only as despite several others recommending what you have, I also received the following advice.

The issues with XP not properly recognizing a burner "is a result of installing a older cdwriter app which overwrites the registry entries native to xp for cd writers." and "You have to hack the registry to get it back. Google xp not recognizing cdburner and find the articles related to registry entries to check and/or correct."

So now I'm left to trying to determine what I should be trying first, the registry hacking or ide controller thing. Obviously I need to probably do both, but in which order is it recommended?

I suppose reinstalling the controller can't mess things up more than it already is?

If it's a USB burner - forget the IDE controller part;the burner isn't connected to that controller.
I'm not sure which registry hack is referred to.
If it's the 'upper filter' removal hack, then the symptoms leading to that step would be a Windows error message which would lead you there.

Agreed, looking like a registry issue more and more. As for the IDE thing, I can't help but wonder if my system is so misconbooberated that it too needs or would hurt to try doing that too.

In that I don't recall if I've used Tweak UI, manually changed the registry (disabling autoplay), or even did both, but in as much as I'm guessing this might all be related to that as well as I think I deleted the OEM cd packet writing software (not sure I did that on this format's reinstall or not), now I'm leaning towards using what seems to be a registry fix found at Dougknox.com (XP-Fixes; Restore CD/DVD drives to Explorer).

Comments appreciated before I try anything as to what best to do regarding the assorted issues surrounding the usb burner...

After some time ago having physically removed my OEM CD/DVD burner, I still found a 'services cdrom' registry entry for AutoRunAlwaysDisable still oddly set at...

NEC MBR-7 NEC MBR-7.4 PIONEER CHANGR DRM-1804X PIONEER
CD-ROM DRM-6324X PIONEER CD-ROM DRM-624X TORiSAN CD-ROM CDR_C36

Pretty sure that needs fixed, but what might one do towards fixing that entry? I don't think uninstalling the usb burner thru dev mgr did anything as I did that in recent months.

I'd have expected RegistryBooster to have fixed registry entries where they refer to devices no longer installed, but with respect to the PIONEER entries, seems RB's not so good at recognizing that sort of issue.

..and likely means nothing, but that same location's

AutoRun entry is 0x00000001 [1]

..all as seen at...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom

I also ran across a registry entry NoDriveTypeAutoRun data entry of 0x00000091 [145]

..as seen at...

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Since this is a USB device, have you went into Device Manager - USB Controllers, expanded the tree and 'uninstalled' the burner then rebooted to let the system reinstall the drivers and the burner?
I would be doing that before touching registry settings - and I don't think registry cleaners are very helpful in this kind of case anyway.

Just duh-noticed event viewer's been recently listing the stopping of "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service" service. Nothing preceeding those event alerts (configuring alerts to popup seems in order).

Windows once again properly names the burner ("DVD-RAM Drive") and type says (Hmm) "CD Drive" and the drive's lined column details all acting normal again.

Also not sure if it was just my going into Tweak UI's autoplay and unticking everything but movie options, but glad to see WinDVD5 again listing as optedable.

Wish I could figure a way to stop IMAPI' from stopping, seems random. Still happening despite setting it's properties for 1st, 2nd & 3rd stops to restart. Something on the system's wacking it.

What a tangled web we weave.

I tend to and do agree.

Also agreed, this's safest/simplest thing to try, and will, but I know I've done this before and I don't recall this mess improving.

Spent all day re-evaluating things.

Unbelievably despite my attempts better describing and simplifying the issues, it resulted in an unbelievable half hr's reading (5 mins for even the hardiest of speed readers).

After some years, just now tried burning as mentioned a VCD onto a reliable media (TDK CD-R disk), but when I clicked Finish Movie > Save to CD, somewhat understandably MSWMM's prompt says a "recordable CD drive was not detected".

As for the overall system, its embarrassing to admit I'm hazy about CD write caching which enables a system to write CD/VCD's (the explorer method?), but too long since burning any VCD's in any other application than MovieFactory.

Kinda leads me to believing that MSWMM might require a CD packet writing app if the explorer method of CD/VCD writing is not the same as that, or in that aspect maybe explorer is broken/disabled.

Other things about the media burning aspects of the system are, I've removed the OEM's burner and before that I also removed any CD related stuff (Click to DVD, etc.) as too many issues just burning DVD's.

As for operations, when inserting blank CD-R into the "USB" super writer, the "name" column in the My Computer window says the drive is a CD Drive [F,G or H:] which one depends on how it's introduced to the system.

And the "type" column lists "CD Drive", but oddly (still using a blank CD-R), the column/line for total size, free space and file system doesn't detail anything for those three things. Normal, I kinda doubt it.

When inserting a recorded VCD, the drive lists everything appropriately*, unless the drive "type" is not supposed to list (for VCD's) "CD Drive".

When instead a music CD is in, those columns do fill in, listing
'zero' for total size, free space, while file system column displays it as "CDFS".

When I pop in a movie DVD, the window's "name" column displays the burner's drive as the 'title of it's movie', the "type" column says "CD Drive", and correctly lists total size, free space and file system. But seems I recall the "type" used to say "DVD/CD-ROM" at one point or another (at least when a movie DVD was in the drive).

Music CD's play fine. So do earlier recorded VCD's and DVD's. DVD burning app's all seem to work w/the USB writer, but DVD Flick doesn't seem to detect the burner (pretty sure it did initially, just now it doesn't).

Also, somehow the drive's properties autoplay tab is only listing optables for WMPC & WMP (WinDVD5 no longer lists) and how to get it to list is beyond me. Un and Reinstalling it likely would do it, but is it necessary or could there be a 'simplier' registry adjustment for WinDVD5 to once again list as an optable player?

As for VCD and DVD movies both listing as a drive type of "CD Drive" (I kinda recall that CD/DVD-ROM was suppsed to be listed for multi-writer drives), so could that alone be underscoring why things seem to be amuck w/the system?

Could that be solely due to registry issues? Or might also
reinstalling some program(s) or hardware fix how the burner and disks are being listed? Oh where are the all seeing, all knowing disturbed intellectual techs (joking) when you need them?

Another issue I'm finding is that back when things kinda all still worked, w/CD's, I seem to recall opening the writer's drive properties and there seems to have been a tab labeled "recording" which I think afforded the "Enable CD recording on this drive" check box", but if I'm not confused or imagining that, it seems the recording tab has disappeared, as now there's just three tabs, general, autoplay and hardware tabs.

I know I'm getting long in the tooth, and maybe that tickable is actually the one titled as "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device" as availed in the drive's 'properties>properties' tab.

But towards getting MSWMM to once again detect a recordable CD drive, I'm guessing that I either need to fix explorer's ability to write cache (preferential to installing a cd writing app) seemingly so as to re-enable MSWMM to burn a VCD (likely would also re-enable DVD Flick to detect the burner).

Note 'Dragn Drop' and 'Click to DVD' were the only two OEM's CD writing app's, but when I last formatted and reinstalled everything, I was awfully careful not to install those, but admittedly I tried tackling this VCD issue once quite some time ago, and I think I installed Click to DVD, but as still VCD recording remained an issue, so I uninstalled it.

As if all that isn't enough, I just found Tweak UI's auto handlers seemingly all bunked up, so I unticked nearly every handler's tick boxes (disabling that aspect of likely contributing to issues), but weirdly I it lists 4 duplicate listings for all of ImgBurn's optables ("Create an Image using ImgBurn", "Burn an Image using ImgBurn" and "Build + Burn an Image using ImgBurn", plus that pane's "delete" button is greyed out so I can't even remove each of those three action's duplicates.

And then there's Tweak UI's "My COmputer" > "Special Folders" which when I navigate there, it lists CD Burning and has a location for this special folder, but can't read the entire pathway to see if that folder even still exists as Tweak UI's details in this pane says when I tried using the "change location" (just to maybe see where if might should now be) cautions that chang'g a special folder may render your system unusable, and don't set 2 spec' folders equal to ea' other or set equal to a system folder like the Fonts folder.

Fearful that clicking the cautionary popup's OK button (rather than cancel), as only angels set foot where no man dares to tread, I clicked okay there and at least found the pathway...

C:\Documents and Settings\My name here\Local

Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning

..and big surprise nothing in the folder created 5/19/06 (when I last formatted & reinstalled) and checked for same changes for the folder's modified date of 12/9/06. I did check for any files or programs changed on 12/9/06 and found nothing suspiciously pointing to why MSWMM reports no detectable CD drive.

And I have to assume the folder should rightly be there, but seems I should be checking on where applications might now expect it to be.

So that's where I'm stuck. Trying to figure out what the primary CD related registry entries should be, getting WinDVD5 back onto the list of autoplay options, figuring out fixes for what if any real issues there are with the way the burner lists disks (as seen in the columns of My Computer), and determining if I'm really missing the recording tab (in the drive's properties window).

Seems one best tackles one thing at a time. I know, but aside from formatting, where to start?

First check on data entries for...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{
4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters" ?

Remove the Upper and Lower Filters per MS's 314060 fix?

Seek mental health guidance.

Okay, recovered quite a few things.

Mental health, USB burner's proper drive listing in My Computer ("name" = DVD-RAM), autoplay works again and WinDVD5 autohandler displays once again as opted autohandler.

As suspected, registry problems.

For those fixes, see last string in this post...

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/648624

But as to why My Computer "always" lists the USB burner's drive "type" as "CD Drive", again I'm pretty sure it's a registry problem, but amaziongly nobody's yet answered whether or not a burner ever lists as anything other than a drive "type" of CD Drive.

I suspect that only when a CD disk is inserted (or maybe when no disk whatsoever is inserted) that only then the burner's drive type might or should list as CD Drive, no?

As for what an XP Home's proper CD Drive registry entries should be, I've yet to decypher, so any posted articles or even your system's related keys and/or values would be appreciated.

And before I try uninstalling the IDE secondary controller, in that I think I read that sometimes that can be problematic, I'm holding off until I can get more details on how to resolve those potential issues before trying to uninstall it.

But I do appreciate your replies and I sure do need more of them even though it might seem I'm hard headed or ignoring good advice.

In my case, 'My Computer' lists the optical drives as 'CD Drive' - perhaps it's because XP does not support DVD burning.
