Hi gang,

First post here, and a total noob to consoles (but I *AM* the GOD of software development so I do know my way around technically ;) ).

Got an XBOX360 Pro from my b-day... long awaited, long wanted.

Now I am trying to understand the nuances of making an XBOX DVD from an ISO.

There are a million articles and tutorials, which I am very appreciative of, but I am lost as to where to start... can someone just give me a quick run down:

Do I need to mod my XBOX firmware to use a DVD burned from an ISO?
If so, how do I know which firmware mod I need? Looks like XDVDMulleter will give some info on XTreme mods, are there other firmware mods that may be required, and if so how do I know?

I read that the ISO needs to have some sort of patch applied to it, but if the info that came with the ISO is sparse, is there a way to tell if it is patched?

I have tried burning an ISO of Sonic using ImgBurn, PowerISO and CloneCD, and every time it burns correctly, but when I insert it into the console the screen that you would get if you put it into a computer comes up: "Please insert this disk into an XBOX 360 console..." Am I just doing something wrong, or does this ISO need more work?

Thanks for the patience. I know this info is out there but I have been searching and getting overwhelmed with all that I am learning that I DON'T know, and am just hopeful that someone who has all of this at their fingertips can shed some light for me!

Cheers, and TIA for any input,

Chris

You will need to flash your drive before you will be able to play backups.

Use this link, to download Textbooks guide on flashing ----->Here

XDVD Mulleter will tell you if games are properly patched (can patch if it needs to be), rebuild games, and much more.

The main thing when burning is to make sure it will play (using XDVD Mulleter), set the layer break to '1913760', burn on quality media (Vebatim) and burn at a low speed (2.4X).

ok, let me try and tackle all that.

Yes you need to do a firmware mod
You will want the most recent iExtreme firmware for your specific DVD drive, and most people choose the 12X speed version

Burning a 360 ISO requires a few small things.
1. a dual layer DVD burner
2. Verbatim DVD+R DL discs
3. Freeware burning program call IMGburn

Patches only need to be applies if you test it with DVD mulleter (steath check) and it fails to have either the DMI,PFI, or security sector. Any respectable release group should already have them as part of the ISO and no patching should be needed. If they are then Xbox Backup Creator or Schtrom can do the job

You may get that message because if you are burning the ISO file rather than the .DVD file (which also would come with any respectable release) then you have to manually set the layer break. The DVD file acts the same as a cue file on CD's where it tells your burner where the file is and how to burn it.

IMGburn
tools-->settings-->write-->layer break. Check user specified and set it to 1913760. Click ok and burn as normal. This is only necessary the first time burning a 360 game

The best way to do it is to buy a Samsung DVD-Rom drive from Ebay flashed with Kreon firmware and get your hand on the original disc and make them yourself. Then no patching is required, you will always have the .DVD file, and it is safer then "aquiring" them online. The drives are:
sh-d162d (IDE) and the sh-d163b (SATA)

and here is the complete method:
1. Stick original disc in your Samsung PC drive and let it spin for a second and be recognized
2. open Xbox Backup Creator (newest version)
3. go to tools tab and click unlock drive
4. go to read tab and start it (make sure it is set to read the full disc and not just the current partition)

once image is made you can burn it.

1. open newest version of IMGburn
2. go to mode and select ?write?
3. now browse for and select the .DVD file you just made
4. Select your burning speed, and booktype the media to DVD-Rom if your burner can booktype
5. hit start and burn it.

WOW! Well, first off, let me just say THANKS for the kind responses and killer info. I was half expecting a flame, and was pleasantly surprised. :)

The ISO of Sonic that I have does have a DVD file with the correct layer break... I actually just wrote it myself since it did not come with one. Would the lack of the firmware hack cause the "Insert disk into an XBOX 360 console..." to come up when I try to load it?

Also, I have a DVD burner that came with my HP a6130n. All of the research and tools I have found show it as DH16A1L, which seems to possibly be a Philips OEM. Can't find any firmware upgrades for it.

Oddly, the first few times I tried to burn a disk, the drive worked just fine, but now, suddenly, when I insert a blank DVD+R DL, the drive won't recognize it...

I have ImgBurn and CloneCD, so that should be good... I will read the tuts you guys gave me and have a go.

Thanks again!

Will post back if I get stuck...

Cheers,

Chris

that is where i usually go to look for firmware, it was down when i posted this or i would have looked for you.

If the DVD drive is not flashed then yes, it will give you an error because it can not yet read back up copies.

as far as the drive not recognizing the discs, are you using a high quality media? Have you run a disc quality check on your media?

Hey Steimy,

That makes sense about the 360 drive... So those discs are potentially good, but I won't know until I do the firmware hack, I guess.

The DVD media I am using, was first GQ stuff I got at Fry's, which was REALLY cheap, but was working. I thought the problems I was having were related to the cheap media so I took them back and got a spindle of Memorex DVD+R DLs, which I have used many times before with great success. But now those are the disks that the drive that was writing them suddenly cannot recognize.

When you say "run a disc quality check" would something like DVD Identifier give me the necessary info? If so, what am I looking for?

Also, I am having some reservations about hacking my firmware... the tutorial seems pretty involved, and even though I have never played online, and probably will not much (if at all), for some reason I am reluctant to risk being banned.

How difficult is the hack? And how likely do you feel it is to be discovered on XBL and get kicked?

Thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it!

Cheers,

Chris
