Hi guys, Ive been reading a lot lately about wii homebrew and backup games and so on. But as far as Ive seen there's only violent ways to do it i.e. cracking open the wii and inseting/soldering a modchip, using weird hack with codes that could easily brick a hard-to-find-these-days wii...and even worse, those beautiful ideas that people get of using new and seemingly untested chips that get bricked when the wii updates...and so on.
So is there any way to use downloaded virtual console games...the ones people upload to websites and let us download them (not from nintendo) and playing it on my virgin 100% unmodded wii?...
I've alo read about some WAD thing but I still dont know what the heck it is...I saw a video on youtube about it and it seemed dangerous, with all the DOS-like interface and codes and stuff...
So if anyone has ANY info that could help me i'd greatly appreciate it.

you can't....however if you are getting a modchip...pick a high quality one like wiikey. make sure it is original
I could be wrong...but probably not.

thanks for your quick reply asif500us , I believe I can't i just want to know if there is any way at all, that maybe a few people know about or something. I've heard good things about wiikey, and very bad things too...there's still the brick factor with it and every modchip. How do i know if it's original?

What you are looking for is an emulator to play Retro games such as SNES, Genesis, etc, right?
You can play on an unmodded WII throught the Twilight hack, if my head is still memorizing stuff correctly :) but you need the Gemco adapter as the Gamecube memory is small and SD is not supported on gamecube mode.
Your best bet is to mod your wii and use the dvd rom to launch ur downloaded roms (many tutorials how to create such DVDs are available, just search the net)

Yes, the wad installer came out a couple days ago and it lets you install VC games on an unmodded wii using the twilight hack elf loader. However it only supports PAL games at the moment and its highly likely that the next wii firmware update is going to block it anyway.

Pardon my dumbness, but what is a Twilight hack elf loader...?... Im kinda lost here...
I really don't want to mod my wii as it was a gift given to me by my mom, and I don't intend to destroy it on an attempt at piracy...(since i get very nervous when tinkering with the insides of something as sensitive as a Wii)... =( ...it holds a tremendous sentimental value for me and I wanted to find a way, such as the flashcarts that come for DS...you know, not-invasive modding...to play VC games. I dont even care about Wii game Backups as I rather buy them...since I only buy Wii games like once every 3-5 months or something like that.
Thanks for your replies guys and any other info is still appreciated =)

The twilight hack is a hacked zelda save file designed to crash the game and then load homebrew programs (elf files). It requires you to have the wii version of zelda twilight princess and an SD card. You put the program you want and the hacked save file onto the SD card, copy the save file to the wii memory, then load zelda. After you select the save and start the game it will crash and then load an elf from the SD card.
The wad installer is an elf program that edits the wii's internal memory to install the game and make the wii think you ligitimally downloaded it from the virtual console.
As I said though I havent tried it yet since currently it only works for PAL VC games and they wont work on an NTSC-U console. But once we get some US games available I'll probably give it a shot.

Hmmm...well I used to have Zelda TP but I sold it...so I wont be able to twilight hack my wii... =( ...I thought it was the name of some group of hackers, I didnt know it was Zelda-game related...lol...
Well I managed to find three versions of WAD installer...but since I dont have Zelda and there's no NTSC-U VC roms yet, I'll have to wait a little longer...
My console is NTSC and it's US region, and as I stated above it's still virgin...sooo...there goes my hopes of playing dl'ed VC games today...lol...
Thanks a lot guys...

You could always rent the Zelda game, install the homebrew launcher channel, and then return the game. Then, if you ever need to launch any homebrew, you can just use the channel and not have to load up the game. This comes with it's risks, so make sure you read up on it before doing it.

When I was reading up about the wad installer the other day I read a couple things saying to not use the homebrew channel for it as its not compatable yet and could brick the wii.
Could be just their disclaimer that they havent tested it with the homebrew channel yet but I wouldnt want to risk it personally.

firefox13,
isnt the homebrew channel limited in terms of minutes of game. I heard that the guys who released it has coded it in a way it expires after i dont know how many minutes. Are you talking about this version or a newer one? Do you have any expicit guide on this stuff?

There is a "hacked" version that doesn't have a time limit. I don't have the file or a link to it, but I'm pretty sure it's easy to find. As for a guide, there are plenty of guides showing how to get the twilight hack working and what to do, but once again, I don't have any links on hand right now.

Thanks dude, Ill give it a shot, though I have a modded wii and i can play roms without the need to the twilight thingy :) just out of curiosity :)

Well, the good thing about the VC releases (and the only real reason to put them on a modded wii IMO) is that you can put on the N64 games (that currently don't have an emulator for the wii). Another really cool thing is that apparently someone was able to inject the Pilotwings rom (which currently isn't a VC game) into another file and install it on the Wii. This means that hopefully it will be possible to use this method to get other classic N64 games onto the wii (even if they aren't available to purchase in the VC).
