OK, I downloaded an AVI file of the movie Revolver and converted it to VOB using Xilisoft video converter. I also dowloaded SRT subtitles for it and applied them to the video using ffdshow. Then I tried burning it to DVD-5 using 1-Click DVD Copy Pro. It allowed me to select the folder of the VOB file to add, but then says the source is not a DVD. What am I doing wrong? Can one burn a DVD movie without the bup and ifo files?

Try 'DVD Flick' to convert the AVI to DVD format, and add the .srt files (and optionally burn the disk).
There is a short, concise guide included that clearly shows the steps required to complete the conversion.

Since my last post, I've tried to play the DVD I copied on my CD-R/RW compatible DVD player to no avail; but when I tried to play a movie I copied directly from an official rental using 1Click DVD Copy Pro, it played perfectly fine. So what I want to know are the specs necessary to play the DVD.

If you are referring to playing the disk (from DVD Flick) in a standalone DVD player, then check the project settings to see that they reflect your video standard (NTSC or PAL).
