Hey all, this is probably a very newbish question but I've looked everywhere and to be frank it's just confusing.

I've never really used my DVD player but I think it burns most if not all formats (Writemaster SH-182D). I'd like to burn video files to a format that will play on most current home DVD players as I'm making a few DVDs for my friends. I understand that there's no such thing as a format that will work on EVERY kind of DVD player (or is there?), but the one that's most compatible will do.

Which DVD format is most compatible with current home DVD players in your opinion?

Thank you.

Your dvd drive will burn both formats but dvd-r would have to be the most compatible.

read some comments about your drive:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters/sams...d-ts-h652d/1608

if you are asking which DVD format is better, +Rs or -Rs..... the -Rs are older and they seem to be recognized (supposedly) easier.... but, if you can Booktype your +R media to DVD-ROM then this seems to be more universally accepted by most (I haven't found one that doesn't) DVD players! You can read all about it here:

booktyping the DVD Plus R format to DVD-ROM should work for most DVD Players but i still find in IMO that the DVD dash R playback in more DVD Players. I ude the Taiyo Yuden DVD dah R format with never a playback problem in almost anything

the key is almost,Zo. I have used both the -Rs and the +Rs Taiyo Yuden media and I have yet to come across any player that won't read the media! My +Rs are booktyped to DVD-ROMs and they have yet to fail me ...... even in my son's finicky playstaion! the only -R Taiyo Yuden media I burned to is the Water Shield disks.... and they play just fine everywhere. So if you booktype you will be fine, too.

I have(had, lent it my buddy and don't care to get it back), a Sansui DVD/VCR combo. That thing would not play DVD-R or DVD+R(not booktyped), the only ones played were DVD+R booktyped to DVD-ROM.

Never had a problem with booktyped DVD+R in any of my players. Did have issues with DVD-R, so I have not bought a DVD-R in close to two years, only DVD+R.

yeah that was my guess

I've had the same thing happen with DVD players that old

I will remember to use the DVD+R booktyped next time and see if that works on older players 4plus years old

Thanks for everyone's input, it's really appreciated. By the sounds of things it seems like booktyping is the way to go so I'll stick with that. Apparently DVD+Rs are easier to work with anyway.

And some that don't, can be upgraded with a modified firmware to be able to booktype.

I also agree. No reason to spend more on +R.

Good price, great quality:

For those that don't buy online, the prices for DVD+R are the same as for DVD-R, there is no difference.
