Its been on my list of things to do for a while; I want to get a PS3 but i don't know which one to get. I believe one of the models are already discontinued. Normally I wouldn't care but due to the whole modding process, I just want to be prepared for any future modding. I'm not sure but I think they said the PS3 is regionless for PS3 games. What MODEL PS3 do some of you have? Any problems? I already know the main differences in the models, besides HDD size. Like ports and wireless capabilities. Does anyone know if there is going to be some new release with something like more RAM, or something important like that? I don't care about hard drive since its easily replaced. Thanks to that thread on EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE PS3. All in all which model is a safe choice?

The only model at the moment is the 40GB version, all others have been discontinued. Sony is going to release a limited edition gunmetal grey version, I think it's supposed to be 80GB. And they've previously stated they plan on continuing the two version methodology. So at the moment, you don't really have any variety in the console version. You're right about regionless games, however blu-ray movies aren't. If you can find one, I'd shoot for a 60GB version. (saw one at the pawn shop a few weeks ago)

Quick response! ^_^. I don't really care about the blu-ray region, but thanks for the confirmation on the regionless game thing. Do you suggest the 60gb because it the same as the 80 besides price and HDD? I wiki it and it has more ports, than the 40, and is has the limited backwards compatibility like the 80gb.

The only real difference is the backwards compatibility. If you don't care about that, the 40GB is perfectly fine. The 60GB uses hardware emulation to play ps2 games and has higher compatibility. While the 80GB uses software emulation (though I remember reading that it still used some ps2 hardware in the process) and has a lower compatibility with ps2 games. As for usb ports, you could probably just add a usb adapter for more ports.

Well I think I might go with the 60Gb if I can find it. If not then towards the expensive 80gb I go.

The 60Gb seems to be the more faulty out of the 3 types of consoles but most wanted. Due to the PS2 hardware inside, it takes up more space and not much room for circulation which may be the cause of the blueray lense burning out. This happend to me and I had to take it back for a 40GB. ($200 store credtit was nice)) But if you can get your hands on a good 60gb version, then it would be better in the long run just for backwards compatability.

Damn, is it bigger externally? I never thought about that. I wan't one of those models the 60 or 80 just for the extra ports, and card reader. even though you can use a adapter.

The US and Jap 60GB versions do have hardware emulation of the PS2 but the European ones dont they are software emulation! As someone was saying we get shafted with higher game prices but we also got shafted but paying more for a more inferior console!

The PS3 is the same externally. gkmpb4 was talking about the hardware taking up more space on the inside, which could cause less circulation.

Is the 40GB Eu model able to software emulate ps2 games?
Cause some people say that it can't do it, neither software nor hardware. Is this true? I don't really need it since I don't have ps2 games, but just to know...

Yeah it's true, All 40GB PS3 do not have any emulation at all. You can not play PS1 or PS2 games on a 40GB console.

The 80gig version uses hardware assisted emulation, it still has some PS2 components in it to help it so it isn't true 100% emulation.

so far i'm still trying to track down a 60gb, but there are people out there that want you to PAY T_T. If i wanted to pay what they payed for it i'd simply buy a new one.

Thats the thing people are over pricing the 60gb so serverly because you CANT buy it brand new anymore, it has been discounted.

Honestly, I'm fine with the idea of no backwards compatibility. I have a modded ps2 and an unmodden (swap magic with keys) ps2. I think we're just to pampered with backwards compatibility. Can you play classic Nes games on a Snes console? How about N64? Sony started it in the first place (as far as I know). Of Course, you can play Nes, snes, N64, Genesis, Saturn, psx, ps2 (some), Game boy, Game boy advanced, Neo Geo, C64, atari 2600, Mega Drive, Dreamcast, DS (some), etc on your PC with an emulator and still have room for Crysis, F.E.A.R., Half life, Doom, Quake, Prey, ES: Oblivion, Turok, Assassins creed, Call of Duty 4, etc, how's THAT for backwards compatibility with next gen capacity :P
