Ive recently bought 50 Datasafe Ritek Grade "A" media, except looking at the discs there is glue overspill on the edges of most of the discs
Does this mean it is not grade A????
Im thinking of returning them to the supplier.

Are there any specific things which mean that a disc is or isnt grade A

Thanks for any help

The grade rating is given to the disc I think by the manufacturer. I don't think you can tell by looking. Buy only from a dealer you think you can trust. I would return the discs you have. Never heard of glue overspill that you describe.

Well im testing one spindle out now to see how they are.

I was told that the grade of the media is on the dye only, and not on the appearance of the disc.

Oddly enough all the media ive tried has had glue on the edges of the discs, except datawrite classics with princo dye

I don't think the glue has anything to do with the grade of the disk. I read your post and took a look at some of my disks. Never really noticed before but my Fuji dvd-r 4x has glue on the edges, Verbatim datalife has glue and TDK 4x dvd+r has even more glue than the others.

i have memorex dvd-r disks and there is no glue on the edges. I had bought those unbranded cheap spindles (dvd-r) and dvd x copy wouldnt recognize them, i havent tried them on any other burning software but for me memorex, sony, maxell discs work best, ill have to try those unbranded discs on dvd decryptor tommorow.

The "Glue" has nothing to do with grading or quality of the disc. the glue is there to hold the two layers of technical plastics that make up the DVD Disc. The grading system is provided by the manufacture. Grade A discs are discs that have passed all of the quality control measures put forward by a manufacture. However, a grade A ritek is a better disc than a grade A Princo, generally speaking, since quality control at Ritek far out-performs that at Princo.

In terms of determining whether or not you have a grade A disc is relatively difficult. Many retailers claim to sell grade A disc, when at best they are Grade B. Some of the most common websites used sell downgraded media, but i wont get into that now. To be sure of a Grade A disc, only use a retailer approve by the manufacturer as these are the only ones who are guaranteed Grade A.

In the UK, www.dvd-and-media.com are one of the best and guaranteed Grade A Ritek discs, unless otherwise stated. There are others, i have listed them at teh top of this forum in a Sticky post.
