After reading the various posts on this forum, I've come to the conclusion that I need to purchase the DVD drive that lets you read Wii game discs.

However, I was wondering if it was necessary to purchase a mod chip after I get the DVD drive. After backing up a game, will it run on the Wii unmoded or do I need the Wii key?

You need to use some kind of modification chip on your wii before it will play backups. The DVD drive that reads wii games is just so you can read / create backups on your P.C. To actually play those backups your wii needs to be modified with a chip to play them. Depending on what chipset your wii has you will have to purchase a relative ModChip. For instance if you run a check with your serial number online you will find out to a degree what chipset you have. But if it is a recent purchase you will most probably need a chip which is compatible with a D2C chipset such as the D2CKEY or D2CPRO etc.
