Hey everyone, been a while since ive posted on AD.
Im getting a PSP in a couple weeks or so, and I know the PSP modding scene has always been very hot probably due to its easy soft-modability.
--questions below if you dont want to read why im here--
I came here to do some preliminary research into modding my psp and I have to say I was blitzkrieged with info! Last time I checked on the mod scene people were dancing in the streets cause they managed to get *nix running. Now it seems you can run game iso's from memory stick, and downgrade from any firmware version! I have a soft modded xbox and ipod so im not really new to the whole idea of it I just had some questions.
--questions--
What can I hope to get out of modding my psp?
-playing isos via mem stick?
-playing nes/snes/other roms?
-supported video/audio formats?
Can I still play original games I actuall own?
Can I still use the ps3/psp functionallity when modded?
Can I return it to factory state after modding?
Is any hardware/certain game purchase required to mod/exploit or can it all be done from memory stick/other?
Whats the brick rate (estimated)?
It seems unbricking is possible is this always true or just certain cases?
Thanks guys more questions when I get a few answers
You can play PS1 games and PSP games off of a memory stick. Just about any emulator imaginable before the PSX and N64 error is possible. N64 emulation is still in the early stages, DC and Saturn aren't working and the DS is the only other one that still isn't worth the time it takes to install. Though like I said PS1 games will run flawlessly (though it may take a little tweaking depending on your CFW).
To mod your PSP you'll need a Pandora battery, you can either go buy one or make one yourself. Check my sig for a link on how to go about modding your PSP. I think it goes without saying you'll also need a memory card (it can be reformatted and used for normal use afterwards)and a USB cable to get the files onto your PSP.
Ok great news about the emulators and I have a ds anyways so it hardly seems worth it!
I looked into this 'pandora' battery and its aparently quite the niche for modders, talk about a lucky break! Although I know there must be someway to mod without using the battery if the installed firmware version is within bounds. I would like to stray from the soldering wherever possible.
Well the problem is if you're buying a new PSP, the Slim (or 2001) you will need the Pandora battery. If you buy a used PSP fat there are ways to do it without the Pandora battery using unpatched versions of Lumines and GTA (I believe, I don't have a Fat so this may be wrong).
If you don't want to solder (which I'm not sure as if you need to, there are ways to soft mod batteries but again I've never done it) then I think the best bet is picking up a Datel battery from codejunkies or somewhere similar. If you look you can find them for under $30, and it's a worthy investment because you'll want a pandora battery if you install TimeMachine which is a handy program for people with a PSP Slim.
I forgot to mention that the chance of bricking your PSP is incredibly slim if you use a Pandora battery and MMS. I think the most common problems you would have would be an incorrectly made pandora battery (assuming you make it yourself) or a bad MMS (don't use Vista, it hardly works), even this things won't necessarily brick your PSP-it just won't load the fw.
