I see a lot of great games having sequels on the PSP, such as God of War, but I see a lot of other games that could have been great on the PSP coming out on the DS like COD and Assassins Creed.
I also hear that after game developers try a game out on the PSP they say it is their last.
http://www.qj.net/Ready-at-Dawn-life-aft...g/49/aid/119944
Is this, the developers stopping games for the PSP and the exclusives out on the DS all a sign of piracy killing the PSP?
What do you think? Let's see if we can make this a thread to discuss about the PSP, its potential and how piracy is slowly killing it.
I'll admit myself, I have a couple ISO's on my memory stick but I will also admit that I got atleast 5 more people to buy a PSP and another 5 to pick up their PSP more after I told them about Custom firmware (Mainly emulators and PS1 compatibility)

Errr - yes you can download ds roms.
Just check out the AD ds forum and look at threads for M3 or R4 or TT or whatever is the flavour of thr month.
IMO it is probably easier for an absolute Noob to buy one of these carts and drag and drop some nds roms over and get playing than it is to get cfw on a psp (judging by the number of posts on this forum). It is probably cheaper too, once you factor in the cost of psp memory cards versus an sd card and the ds cart.
Good to see that you love the psp though :-)

no
the rason i say this is that all consoles have the ability to do this pc, xbox, ps2, psp, ds..... the list goes on
but there are people still out there buying these games it will never get to a satge where no one will buy the games
psp is the biggest of the pirates as the games take next to no time to get hold of and can be ripped easy
(ds is a bit harder for that)
but ps3 has blue ray 50gb try downloading one of those games i dont think i will ever do that and i dont think i want to as ps3/xbox360 game last for ages.
the wii may be the next big pirate as its easy to chip and the games are still on dvd and its a cheap (Ok) console to buy
so as long as people by a game once in a while i think its all fine

I know all systems can be modded but in my opinion, the PSP is the easiest, even over the DS! Why?
1. All that's needed is a simple firmware flash, simple now with Pandora.
2. You don't need any online ordered parts, Its all Memory Sticks and Games ripped or through torrents.
3. The Memory sticks are cheaper by the day. A 4GB is like $40 now. That's around 4 games for $40 give or take a few depending on their size.
4. The main reason, Sony can't do anything to stop this unfortunately (and fortunately because of the emulators and all homebrew).

i would say the DS is easier to mod, even if you have to buy a flashcart online. it doesn't change the DS firmware, so there are no chances of bricking. microSD cards are dirt cheap, and DS roms are only in MB, so you can store a crapload on the microSD.
the wii and DS are innovative and unique because they're different from the competition, and they're cheaper than the competitors. hell, the wii is still sold out every store i check.
the reason sony can't stop piracy is because of the firmware. if they locked it down from launch and never released updates, then custom firmware wouldn't have been created. sure, you wouldn't be able to use remote play or internet browser, but at least you have full control over your product.
but if sony was smart, they wouldn't care about custom firmware. they would profit much more, because more people would buy psp's.
i still buy the games i have on my psp. why? because the games are worth owning. even if the crisis core i have is the UNDUB version, i still bought the english version.
ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure
got a whole lot more to list . . .

much agreed
the psp you'd have to buy a memory stick to do pandoras then you may need to buy a pandoras battery or risk the hard mod the you have to risk the flashing then download a game around 600mb (large compared to most hand helds) you have to work out how to use it (if a noob)
ds simple buy card and memory stick together then download game 32mb seconds. then plug into computer copy it over and away you go.
no i have never used the r4 card but it sounds simple to me and iv never used it before.
every time i talk to someone to tell them that they can mod there psp it takes ages to explain it all.
sony make it easy dont they lol
with the ps3 you can install your own op system so you could use that too boot ripped games and you can change the hhd your self to 400gb+
and i remember the boss of sony ages ago saying that the psp hackers are very good and he was impressed by there work. then next bit he said was even better, the ps3 has keyboard support so it will be even easier to hack
lol cant remeber where i read it (think it was qj.net)

I think it depends on what type of video game consumer you are.
What I mean by this is do you buy brand new games or do you buy used games.
If you're the type of consumer that only buys brand new retail copies and then you stop buying to download then yes you hurt the game developers.
If you are the type of gamer that buys only used games and then starts to download then the only person IMO you are hurting is the game reseller, ie gamestop, babbages, play n trade, etc.
I've helped folks with cfw on their psp's and they give me this jive about only wanting to play emulators on their psp's and they don't condone piracy. Well give you a gold star. If you aren't a pirate then go get your gameboy advance and buy the remakes or buy a wii and play them there right? It's a load of crap. Piracy is what it is and there isn't good or bad at the end of the day but it's funny to me how people justify what they do instead of being straight up about it.
And game companies complaining about piracy ruining the psp? Come on. Over priced games that aren't worth a damn is what really hurts. They want to complain about pirates but it's they that are the cut throats. 40 bucks for a psp game that gets marked down to 20 bucks in less than half a year? What's that tell you? Yeah should have priced it a bit lower.

in my opinion piracy is not going to kill any game or console ..in my house we have two boys ...two standard psps.two standard ps2s.one standard360..one flashed360.one psp upgraded firmware .two ds lites with a r4 card .one chipped xbox and one standard wii.....hundreds of pounds worth of consoles and more spent on games(and a lot of copied stuff)..we buy some games at various times of the year but with the amount of new games continuously being released you need to be a millionare to keep up..if the games were cheaper people would not feel the need to pirate....you only copy expensive stuff if you cannot afford the real thing ..

It didn't kill the PS2 because IMO, the PS2 was the biggest pain in the a$$ to mod (Other than the gamecube which was virtually impossible without major hardware mods). Even after a softmod, you would still need to do the swap trick or you would need a modchip. HD loader wasn't compatible with all games either. The Xbox on the other hand was easy to mod. Firmware flash and load burned games right up.

Xbox was awesome, there was so many hacks and homebrew and stuff. It was basically a PC. There was just so much on their, the media center, emulators, all those clear cases, lights, X3 chip... Too bad my xbox got stolen twice with my retail games... The chip installs were easy too, besides the first few chips those were crazy. Softmod came along and people mod more than ever. I still remember people having a shit load of games on the hard drive.
PS2 was indeed a pain in the ass to pirate, because sony locked it down really good. But the current D2C wii's are much harder to install, the legs of the chips are really tiny. But there is newer chips that are much eaiser now.
Anyway, i would think the xbox, and psp had a lot of pirates, why i donno. I dont think piracy is killing the psp, although it does hurt it. But another thing i wonder about is what will happen if dark alex quits making cfw and sony has new protection? Or what if no one makes cfw again?

not at all sales are up but with no indication its due to CFW....most people don't even know it exists ....its just that after a while of being on a forum with everyone asking for CFW you start thinking we all have hacked psp's LOL!

Yea, I loved my PS2 for games but Xbox was the way to go for Multimedia. I have my Xbox running Linux through which I run Windows 98 SE! I have the XBMC 360 skin installed and I love it! I will NEVER sell my Xbox 1.

That's not strictly true - the trade in second hand games helps fuel the sale of new games, ie you have a bunch of old games you don't play anymore - you go to the shop and trade them in for a new game - the old games are helping generate the sale of the new game.
The market is more complicated than it may at first appear.

I have a similar ethos :-)
I drive a used car, but somebody bought that car brand new. Now, when that person (the original owner) wanted a new car they very probably used the funds from the sale from their now used car to buy a new car (most likely a trade in)..................and so the cycle goes on.
The secondhand market supports the sale of new unused goods in a very fundamental way - basic economics. Do you see what I mean?
By buying secondhand games, you are indirectly supporting the sale of new games in most cases (ok, so if somebody decides they gonna sell up completely and get rid of their psp too, then they're not gonna buy anymore psp games - but maybe they'll trade it in for another gaming platform etc etc etc).

You missed my point entirely. However your opinion is valid on it's own. It just doesn't have anything at all to do with what I said.

Another older news article on Piracy that I remembered. EA Games or Criterion, The makers of the popular PC game Crysis just announced that they are done making PC Exclusives because of the amount of money they lost in Piracy through the game Crysis.
