PSP firmware upgrading help pls!

Hey everyone, I have a psp fat that i did a custom firmware thingy to, and right now its 3.40 OE-A. I downloaded a few games and they work fine, like Street fighter alpha max 3.
But i dled Patapon and wen i boot it it stays on the Now loading screen forever.
I understand that i need to upgrade my firmware to something higher, but if someone could tell me the steps i need to take, Id appreciate it

oh yeh, and i also tried Darkstalkers the something something tower, which freezes in a black screen but that might be a bad iso or something.

anyway, this may fix some games that arent working. Go to ur recovery menu, config and change the UMD mode to Np9660.
