Ripping VOB files to MPEG2

I have a home video that is on a dvd. It is not encryted or anything. I want to transfer the vob files to mpeg2 for editing. What is the best and easy to use to program do this with? I need something that will keep the quality and audio in sync. Thanx

Also I heard that you can just rename the VOB files from .VOB to.mpg and it should work. Is that right?
