Mario Kart - playing 2 players online, is it possible for 2nd player not to be guest?

I was just curious

whenever I play online with a friend, the 2nd player is always registered as guest. So that means he doesnt gain or lose points depending on performance...

is this the only way? I mean, he has a mii profile, and its even listed when selecting the profile before going online. But during rankings, he's always a guest...

If this is the only way to do it, what is the point in not letting hte 2nd guy be a real player and not a guest?
