Okay, I got a pre-soldered wii-clip and argon chip. I installed it and booted an original game, the blue led flickered for several seconds and the disc loaded. I then tried a backup of the same disc and the blue led flickerrd for a couple of seconds and the disc stopped spinning without loading. The disc channel said the disc is unreadable. The disc was an Imation 16x DVD-R.

I have since tried several different disc types with no success, none of them load but all originals do. It's my understanding that if the clip/chip is not working, nothing will load. Is this right? If so, what is likely to be the problem, before I contact the supplier to get a replacement.

No your understanding is wrong.

There is always a possibility that the originals would work but backups would not if the instillation is not done properly.

There have been so many users that have had issues when using the WiiClip. It is pretty much a luck game to get a proper instillation.

But here are a few things you can try....

1) Make sure all soldering joints are properly made between WiiClip and ARGON and none of them are bridging.

2) Make sure the D2C chipset pins are evenly spaced so the WiiClip can make contact properly with all leg pins (careful you don't break leg pins).

3) make sure the WiiClip is seated properly onto the D2C chipset.

4) If you have the extra 4 region free wires soldered make sure they are connected to the proper letter.

O, P, Q

V = Pal
SX = NTSC(U)
Y = NTSC(J)

5) Make sure ARGON is updated to the latest firmware (1.8 at this time).

6) Make sure Jtag programmer is not connected to Flat Cable during normal use.

You are better off and will have a more stable install if you get rid of the WiiClip. If you are not good at soldering then pay a pro to install the Modchip for you.
