Here's the thing. I bought an xbox a few years back, had it modded, and it died in about a year. I was thinking about getting a 360, but I've heard they have a lot of problems. So doesn't that mean if it's opened up to be flashed and it breaks down, I'm screwed? My other issue is, I have essentially no technical skill whatsoever. So are there electronic shops (as in a place I can drive too) where you can actually get your 360 repaired and flashed? Any opinions on this would be greatly appreciated and sorry if all this sounds very naive, because frankly I am lol.

with the falcon MOBO most of the RROD problems have been solved; there still have been some RROD on this board though, so not everything has been fixed. also, if you go to a shop that knows what they are doing, they can take the warranty sticker off and put it back on so it looks like it was never messed with and you shouldnt have a problem sending it back into MS if it should break on you. and as to if there are any shops around you, it depends on where you live at. check craigslist and see. or there are some people on here you can send it to and will flash it for you if you cant find a place locally.

thanks for the advice wabashman. Does anyone know if it matters what make/model of the 360 I get? Do I need one with a hard drive to play backups?

You don't need a hard drive to play backups. As far as the drive to get all of the new ones are either the Benq or the Hitachi 79 (Maybe Samsung but I think they're done). The Hitachi 79 requires some soldering for it to play backups, so hopefully someone can tell you how to narrow it down to a Benq.

Even with the new Falcon MB 360's can fail. That is the truth, it may be a less chance but they do fail and at a much higher rate than industry norms (which is at 1%-2%) though it is lower than the 33%+ for the total line of M$ products. If you do your best defense is to get a GOOD extended warranty from a place like BestBuy, CircuitCity or similar. Good Luck with your choice.
