I've a 2nd-hand NTSC-J Wii with firmware 3.2J and Wiikey 1.9s, and have been playing a mixture of backups (NTSC-J and NTSC-U) and originals.
I've managed to play a back-up of SMG (J) after updating to 1.9s.
Then I read somewhere that after being able to play SMG (J), I could now play SMG (U) (since no more updates would happen).
I inserted SMG (U) Original into Wii.. a black screen with Japanese error messages appeared, I had to reset (can't remember if it's a reset or unplug/plug power cable) my Wii.
After that, ALL games, regardless of originals or backups, encounter that big "?" and an "Unable to read disc. Please refer to operational manual.." Japanese error message.
All other channels - Weather, News, WiiConnect24 - are still working.
I'm contemplating sending this back to Nintendo, but i've no clue what happens if they saw that it's a modded set.
Recovery Attempt:
I've tried to do a system format, and then a system update via WiFi connection. My Wii is now still at 3.2J, but to no avail - all discs are still encountering "Unable to read disc" error, thus I hadn't been able to run Wiikey 1.9s and 1.4 Config. All other channels are still working as well.
Please, can any kind souls advise if I've bricked my Wii, or if it's a lens/laser problem or exactly, what the solution to this problem might be?
