I have copied the .vob file from my dvd camcorder onto my hard drive then changed the file extension to .mpg so I can edit my movie in Sony Vegas, but only the first couple seconds comes up. I tried playing the .mpg in Windows Media player, just to see if the whole thing would play, and the whole clip is there but the video goes into slow motion and audio is not synched to the video. basically it's just a mess.

The real annoyance is that with 2 clips this conversion process works fine, but with about 5 of my clips it just doesn't work

What is going on??

Instead of just changing the file extension try Vob2mpg or Avidemux to go from VOB-mpeg:

Are you talking about VOB2MPG, or Avidemux? Just curious which one worked.
Cheers.

I am also about to try to convert an entire DVD to one long MPG and am hoping vob2mpg will work. Once I have that big MPG, then can I use avidemux to split the MPG into individual episodes/chapters manually? Just wondering before I download and install avidemux.

Question: is there any difference (in end quality or size of the mpg) between these two:

1. Rip a DVD to my hard drive using DVD shrink; then use vob2mpg to create a single mpg file from the multiple vob files in the video_ts folder

OR

2. DVD Shrink > Edit > Preferences > Output Files > *uncheck* the box "Split VOB files into 1GB chunks (recommended)"; then rip the same DVD to my hard drive; rename (or copy and rename) the single VOB file to mpg

'Course once you make the preference change in DVD Shrink, option 2 is actually quicker and easier than step 1. I just wanted to check, from people that know a lot more than me, if one method is superior to the other?

Thanks in anticipation!
