just a quick one(ahem) how do i drop a divx file onto a dvdr to play in a standalone divx player?

No piracy-related download talk, mate, you could end up with a cap popped in your ass !! To answer yer question, burn as data onto cd-r, not dvd, using burning app of your choice.
