I'm not sure if I'm in the right place or not, but here goes.I just recently purchased a LaCie DupliDisc DVD 121 24/8x from Overstock.com.
These people seriously overstated the capabilities of this machine as a stand alone unit (I don't have a computer of my own) and now I find myself unable to record DVD's. (But it does make great cd's) Someone told me I need a decoder, but i'm absolutely clueless as to what to buy. Can someone please help me????

What exactly are you trying to duplicate ( if dvds, then are they purchased movies, or home made movies) ?

I am trying to duplicate store bought movies. When I was inquiring on Overstock ( where i purchased my Dupli Disc) I was not told that it wouldn't record original store bought movie discs. As a matter of fact, the guy I was talking to, that sold it to me seriously misrepresented what it could do without being hooked up to a computer. I only found out afterwards when i called the tech department that you had to hook up to a computer to make the most of the dvd copying features. Like I said, it does make great cd's and since I really wanted a duplicator like this, I bought it. I hadn't seen one for the price I paid, that copied both cd's and dvds! And I seriously could not have bought a computer for what I paid for my duplicator!

Nearly all store bought dvds have some copy protection on them. So without a pc and decryption software, backing up (duplicating your own origional so it can remain safe and pristine, while your kids thrash the backed up copy) is impossible.

These machines are aimed at small video production companies and the like. Mass duplication of commercial hollywood retail films raises questions you don't want asking ;)

Salespeople,by definition, sole purpose in life is to sell stuff (right or wrong) to people, reguardless of usefulness. It unfortunately, is up to the buyer to beware.
