cant burn a dvd

hi
i am using windows xp /nero and cant seem to brurn files for backup purposes on to a dvd.
heres the log from nero . i hope someone can help

You are using Nero 8, bad news. Use version 6 or 7, much more stable. If burning iso's try Imgburn, free from www.imgburn.com

not burning iso's just ordinary word files jpegs etc just work files i wish to back up on disk

if you ever get those dvdrs to work, odds are that the info stored will degrade in a short time to non readable.

ok not quite sure what that all means
DVD-R = Works
DVD-R = Is not supported
DVD-R? = Not tested
does it work,not supported or not tested rather comfusing
i have changed the nero settings(thanks to a simple answer from another forum) and done the job now
thanks for responding although this is a beginners thread not much help just a simple answer would do.
