Hey I wanted to get everyones opinion. they are starting to put older movies on Blu ray. What year do you all think blu ray (hd) movies should be put out? In other words does it make sense to put a movies made in say 1974 on Blu ray? Would some of you say no br movies before 1995? What year would you pick to start from. Can a movie like Blazing Saddles that was in 1974 really be in high def. What are your thoughts

Like eatsushi said in another thread, 35mm film can contain more resolution than a 1920x1080 high-def movie.

As long as the original film stock is in fairly good condition, the studios can make a high-def or even 4K digital master that can look as good as the original film was when it was shown in theaters.

In other words, classic movies on BluRay or HD DVD can look as good as modern movies. So in answer to your question, a classic movie like Blazing Saddles can be mastered to something that's greater than high-def - like 4K - since film can contain more resolution than the current 1920x1080.

Just look at the following reviews of HD DVD movies:

The Searchers - 1956 - Picture Quality 4.5/5

Grand Prix - 1966 - PQ 4.5/5

2001: A Space Odyssey - 1968 - PQ 5/5

Bonnie & Clyde - 1967 - PQ 4.5/5

Blazing Saddles - 1975 - PQ 4/5

eatsushi's post had a link to article on how they restored and remastered Blade Runner at 4K resolution. This is how they can preserve classic films in a digital medium at a resolution that's higher than high-def.
